SUMMARY
Works as a senior carpenter sign fabricator at Charlotte Douglas International Airport primarily performing complex graphic work in the design layout installation fabrication and printing on various materials to be used in producing signage throughout airport complex. This will require basic up to advanced graphic design and illustration skills. Preforms high level work preparing and performing cabinet making trim carpentry concrete work and building construction work. Perform other general maintenance work incidental to above duties or necessary to keep buildings in working order including basic HVAC plumbing and electrical.
Responsibilities:
Design signs within compliance using specialized software. Produce prints on laser wide format inkjet and thermal printers. Plotters and screen-printing press. Produce signs using specialized printers and/or engraver. Prepare signs for installation. Install signs at appropriate locations (roads building etc.) Performs all aspects of construction work such as carpentry cabinet making metal stud framing ceiling and acoustical tile installation sheet rock installation and finishing and door/door jamb installations. Compiles lists of equipment tools and supplies needed. Calculates cost estimates obtains materials. Provides direction and training to other employees. Operates cars vans bucket trucks and related vehicles. Repairs and maintains building systems such as plumbing and electrical equipment as needed to keep systems in working order. Perform repairs to carpet security doors and gates passenger seating and overall appearance to the traveling public. Inspect and repair building envelope such as roofs windows doors and gutters. Inspects assigned airport construction projects. Coordinates work with contracted construction inspectors and tenants. Subject to emergency call back for equipment repairs and inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduate/GED required with five years of experience or associates degree and three years experience in a relevant work/industry/military/job specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties. Working knowledge of other building trades and general building maintenance requirements desirable.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the methods procedures safety practices and tools required to perform sign fabrication general carpentry and related construction work.
Mastery of skills to use tools to perform carpentry and related construction work.
Skills to read and write sufficiently to complete related paperwork and read schematic designs and blueprints.
Skills to calculate cost estimates and measure items.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers tenants and the public and represent the airport in a professional and positive manner.
Ability to provide direction and train other employees.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of other building systems plumbing electrical and HVAC.
Physical Requirements:
Spends about 70% of the time standing bending reaching walking and driving. The rest of the time includes a combination of sitting twisting keeling squatting crawling lifting shoveling and carrying. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. About 5% of time can lift pull or carry up to 100 lbs a short distance with another person.
Works inside and outside. May include exposure to machinery dust chemicals fumes solvents moving objects/vehicles scaffolding ladders vibrating tools excessive noise large crowds and slippery or uneven surfaces. Uses a variety of electrical and hand tools.
Sensory Requirements:
Touch hearing vision (color distinction distance near peripheral depth) speech.
General Information:
Usual shift is 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday however schedule subject to rotating weekend and holiday duty irregular hours overtime and emergency calls back to work.
Valid drivers license in state of residency and ability to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit.
Ability to pass a background check in advance of start date required. Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and therefore exclude from employment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
