Job Summary

Widener University is currently seeking a Staff Therapist to join the office of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This is a 10-month clinical role and serves as an integral part of the counseling inter-disciplinary mental health team providing direct routine and emergency mental health care to students in addition to consultation outreach and support to the university community. The main responsibility of this position includes direct clinical service to students by way of individual mental health services consultation and collaboration across the university campus.

The position reports to the Executive Director of CAPS and falls under the division of student engagement and transformation. The office of CAPS applies a holistic approach to help students achieve greater self-awareness and self-regulation improve relationships and attain independence as they progress toward successful degree completion. CAPS staff work closely across campus with multiple departments to support student health and well-being.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

Primary Responsibilities:

Direct Clinical Service and Consultation (75%):

  • Provides short term individual therapy services to the student population
  • Collaborate with CAPS staff in providing continuity of care and follow up for students with significant and emergent emotional and psychological needs
  • Facilitates communication with faculty staff parents and students around mental health needs and concerns
  • Actively collaborates with campus partners to provide services in a holistic timely manner
  • Provides on-call after hours crisis services in rotation with other staff members
  • Maintenance of thorough and prompt documentation into the EHR system on site

Supervision and Training (10%):

  • Participation in regular group and individual meetings with CAPS staff
  • Supervision of trainees as needed

Secondary Responsibilities:

Campus Partnerships and Outreach (15%):

  • Serves on interdepartmental committees and task forces as requested that may include yet are not limited to: Traumatic Brain Injury Support Committee and other university committees as assigned
  • Demonstrate the ability to design and implement innovative outreach and programming
  • Assists with the development of targeted outreach programs including Freshman Seminars and Orientation Sessions to support transfer students international students fraternity and sorority life and student-athletes.
  • Assists the CAPS leadership and clinical team to accommodate ongoing student faculty and staff programming requests

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills able to speak effectively to large groups
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to interact effectively in both small groups and one-on-one and across disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Good sense of humor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • Candidates must be license eligible to practice in the state of Pennsylvania as a mental health professional
  • Completion of Masters or Doctoral degree in related areas of expertise
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in a college counseling center or other mental health center working with adolescents or adults
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Knowledge of laws that pertain to the provision of clinical mental health services such as HIPAA FERPA and ADA

Preferred:

  • Current Pennsylvania license to practice as a mental health clinician.
  • Doctoral level degree completion preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

  • Rotating after hours coverage on-call crisis intervention coverage as well as some structured evening or weekend programming.
