DescriptionThe Workforce Development Supervisor Paint reports to the Director Workforce Development and is responsible for developing and executing training and development programs while improving the operational human capital practices for trades personnel within the paint position will also work very closely with the Trade Manager Paint to make sure the department is appropriately supported. This role will involve a mix of both delivering all aspects of trade specific training as well as time in the field to ensure standards are maintained for team members including painters blasters and others supporting the department. Leading department specific safety initiatives will be a key focus. The impact of this role will be seen in lower instances of safety issues increased production efficiency through driving skill and ability to trades employees improved quality metrics and paint department process improvements.
Note: Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver.
The following schedule is available:
Morning: 6:15am 2:15pm (Monday to Friday).
What youll do
- Provides trade-specific advice and leads training for all employees.
- Reviews current curriculum and produces new training material and methods to maximize effectiveness of the paint departments General Supervisors and trades employees.
- Assists with identifying appropriate workforce planning and works with planning teams to ensure accurate workforce plans are developed.
- Provides performance feedback on General Supervisors Chargehands and Apprentices as required in partnership with Area Managers and/or SOC Managers.
- Reviews performance data solicits feedback from trades and selects target processes for trade specific process development.
- Ensure trades workers adhere to supplier and regulatory procedures and standards (classification societies paint manufacturers etc.) and support inspections tests and general compliance.
- Develops and monitors training and material budgets and periodically reports on cost performance and variances.
- Responsible for keeping up to date on new trade technology certifications methods and procedures; maintains and develops training material accordingly.
- Develops processes and procedures for quality installations data collection data distribution data analysis and corrective action plans.
- Facilitates cross SOC quality process issues and ensure resolution/communication feedback.
- Establishes equipment protection policies and procedures.
- Leads various workplace investigations including post-incident respect in the workplace and general misconduct.
- Supports General Supervisors with personnel management including advising on appropriate corrective actions promoting consistency of absence management and disciplinary processes and overseeing completion of Drug & Alcohol Checklists.
- In collaboration with Ability Management supports General Supervisors in identifying appropriate assignments for employees requiring accommodation.
- Leads by example and demonstrates Seaspans Core Values.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What youll bring
- Recognized paint trades certification.
- Minimum 6 years of paint related work experience in a heavy industrial environment (preferably in shipbuilding) or advanced education in a related field with 4 years related work experience.
- Minimum 2 years supervisory and employee relations experience in a unionized environment.
- In-depth knowledge of cross department production responsibilities specific to shipbuilding.
- Time management and organization skills with a demonstrated commitment to follow-up and follow-through.
- Ability to motivate others lead change have difficult conversations and administer discipline when necessary.
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships and lead others towards a shared goal.
- Commitment to safety and quality and demonstrated experience in the application of behavioral based safety.
- Appreciation and understanding of the value of diversity within a team.
- Excellent written verbal and electronic communication skills with proficiency with MS Office products and web-based applications.
