Job Description:

The Applied Sport Scientist will support UofL Healths sports medicine initiative in the local community. Specifically this position will play a pivotal role in supporting the Racing Louisville FC of the National Womens Soccer League (NWSL) through the sports medicine partnership between UofL Health and Louisville City Investments LLC. Thus while the Applied Sport Scientist will report directly to UofL Healths Director of Sport Science this role will operationally report to the Director of Medical and Performance for the Racing Lou FC.

In this capacity the Applied Sport Scientist will support Racing Lou FC on a daily basis by monitoring each professional womens soccer players workload and recovery on a day-to-day basis including but not limited to analyzing the physiological and testing data collected by the team. The Applied Sports Scientist shall consult with other team staff including the technical medical and performance staff when determining team and player readiness and fitness to train and play. The Applied Sport Scientist will also support the Lou City FC and academy teams on a tertiary basis as a sports medicine and science consultant and liaison to the broader sport science team within UofL Health.

This role requires a broad scientific understanding and focus on helping maximal performance and endurance while lessening the risk of injury.

Essential Functions

Strategic Periodization: Collaborate with technical medical and performance staff to strategize ways to maximize team and individual player readiness for training and competition.

Workload and Recovery Monitoring: Implement technology and other means to collect data monitor and report on team and player status on a daily basis. Use this process to manage evaluate and improve the overarching strategic periodization plan.

Injury & Illness Risk Mitigation: Collaborate with technical medical and performance staff to develop multi-disciplinary evidence-informed interventions to minimize incidence of illness and injury and enhance athlete well-being.

Return-to-Play Monitoring: Monitor rehabilitation progress and to advise team staff on return-to-play progressions that will allow players to successfully return to performance after sustaining an injury.

Medical & Performance Support: Support team athletic trainers physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches with athlete assessment rehabilitation and fitness training activities.

Other Functions:

  • Minor Athlete Meetings: Maintain mandatory meeting schedule with minor athlete and the team medical staff to review and educate on workload and recovery.

  • AMS Support: Assist with health and performance data management and reporting using available sport technologies and athlete data management applications.

  • Sport Science Technology Management: Assist with the maintenance calibration and staff training of various sports medicine athlete assessment technologies.

  • Consultation for Other Lou City Subsidiaries: Serve as a consultant to the bespoke needs of Lou City FC and the LouCity Racing Academies while serving as their primary sport science liaison to the UofL Health sport science team (e.g. Director Applied Epidemiologist etc.).

  • Community Sports Medicine Initiatives: Support UofL Healths effort to provide sports medicine and science services to other sponsored organizations in the community (e.g. local high schools University of Louisville Athletics etc.).

  • Community & Industry Education: Actively organize and contribute to local regional and national professional development opportunities.

  • Research Support: Support research initiatives between UofL Health and the NWSL Racing Lou FC Lou City FC and their academies.

  • External Partnerships: Collaborate with community academic and industry partners to establish research other innovation initiatives.

Education:

  • Minimal education (required): Masters degree in sport science bioinformatics mathematics statistics engineering exercise physiology athletic training public health or related discipline from an accredited college/university.

  • Preferred education: Completed or actively pursuing doctorate in a related discipline (defined above) at an accredited college/university.

Experience:

  • Minimum experience (required): An equivalent of 3 years of full-time experience working at the collegiate Olympic or professional sport level as an applied sport scientist. Non-full-time experience can be considered in lieu of full-time experience but the exchange rate will not be 1:1.

  • Preferred Experience: At least 5 years of full-time experience working at the collegiate Olympic or professional sport level.

Minimum certification requirements (required):

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) before the first day of employment.

  • Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS) certification through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (Must obtain within 180 days of start)
