What does Thomson Reuters Labs do We experiment we build we deliver. We support the organization and our customers through applied research in informational retrieval and natural language processing. We work closely with product and domain experts to identify compelling solutions at the intersection of user need and technical feasibility. Our team is designing the next generation of search technology for Legal and Tax Professionals globally. We drive AI innovation for Thomson Reuters Core Research Products including Westlaw Practical Law and Checkpoint.

As an Applied Scientist I you will contribute to the research development and documentation of AI solutions that enhance the value of Thomson Reuters products and internal business systems. You will work under the guidance of senior team members collaborating closely with engineers product managers and fellow scientists to deliver high-quality reliable and scalable outcomes. This is an early-career role suited for individuals eager to grow their expertise in machine learning and natural language processing while making measurable impact.

About the Role

As a Applied Scientist I you will:

  • Contribute to the research prototyping and implementation of ML/NLP models and systems under the direction of senior scientists and engineers.
  • Support end-to-end experimentation: data exploration feature engineering model training evaluation and error analysis.

  • Document methodologies experiments model artifacts and results to ensure reproducibility and knowledge sharing.

  • Deliver assigned tasks on time and with a high degree of accuracy; proactively communicate status risks and blockers.

  • Follow best practices in coding testing version control and MLOps to ensure maintainable and reliable solutions.

  • Collaborate effectively with immediate team members participating in stand-ups code reviews and research discussions.

  • Proactively build knowledge of ML/NLP techniques tools and emerging trends; contribute insights to improve ways of working and applied research practices.

  • Partner with product and engineering teams to align solutions with requirements metrics and acceptance criteria.

About You

Youre a fit for the role of Applied Scientist I if your background includes:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Data Science Mathematics Engineering or a related field; or equivalent practical experience. Masters degree is a plus.

  • Foundational knowledge of machine learning statistics and NLP concepts (e.g. classification sequence modeling embeddings evaluation metrics).

  • Proficiency in Python and common ML/NLP libraries (e.g. NumPy pandas scikit-learn PyTorch or TensorFlow spaCy/Transformers).

  • Experience with data wrangling model training and evaluation in a research or project setting (academic internship or industry).

  • Familiarity with software engineering practices: Git code reviews testing and reproducible experimentation (e.g. notebooks plus scripts).

  • Basic understanding of cloud environments and MLOps tools is a plus (e.g. AWS/Azure/GCP Docker experiment tracking).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document work clearly and collaborate within a team.

  • Growth mindset with the ability to take feedback learn new methods and improve continuously.
