What you will do forHarris County Precinct 4 (HCP4)

Harris County Precinct 4 is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Wildlife Care Specialist to join our Parks Department team. This role is ideal for someone who brings Heart to animal care Hustle to daily operations and a commitment to Higher Standards in public service and environmental stewardship.


The Wildlife Care Specialist is responsible for the daily care of resident animal ambassadors at the Wildlife Sanctuary in Bear Creek Pioneers Park and for supporting outreach and educational services throughout Precinct 4. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented calm under pressure and passionate about animal welfare and public engagement.
This position requires a strong work ethic a willingness to work outdoors in all conditions and the ability to interact professionally with the public staff and volunteers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Animal & Facility Care
  • Provide daily feeding and enrichment for a variety of species including avian hooved and reptilian animals.
  • Clean and maintain indoor and outdoor animal enclosures to the highest standards of hygiene and safety.
  • Administer medications and provide first-response care as needed.
  • Schedule and transport animals for veterinary care using county vehicles and livestock trailers.
  • Maintain detailed animal care logs including health observations treatments and behavioral notes.
  • Monitor inventory and request supplies as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of barns medical pens aviaries and park grounds.
  • Operate equipment such as blowers and pressure washers to maintain facility appearance.
  • Assist service providers (e.g. veterinarians farriers) as needed.
  • Identify and report facility maintenance needs through work order requests.
  • Perform groundskeeping duties including litter control and debris removal.
  • Support emergency response efforts as required.
Outreach & Educational Services
  • Conduct community outreach to raise awareness of Precinct 4s parks wildlife and natural resources.
  • Develop and deliver engaging environmental education programs focused on local ecosystems flora fauna and watersheds.
  • Support community center operations as needed.
  • Use county vehicles daily to perform job duties across multiple locations.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree (or two years of post-secondary education) in science wildlife or a nature-related curriculum from an accredited college or university

OR:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution
  • Four (4) years of direct experience handling equine swine caprine avian and/or reptilian species.


Licensure:

  • Valid Texas drivers license with a good driving record.

Preferences

Experience:

  • Experience as a wildlife rehabilitator veterinary assistant/technician or in farm animal care.(preferred)

  • Familiarity with animal handling enrichment and basic veterinary care. (preferred)



General Information

Position Type Salary and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular Full-time 40 hours per week

  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk use hands and fingers to handle feel and reach with hands and arms; frequently required to sit climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.
  • This position must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is periodically exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat & humidity; night-time shifts; and routine use of a computer monitor.
  • Expect to work in a shared office/work environment with humans animals and reptiles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
