ProMedica Toledo Hospital is one of the largest acute-care facilities in the region. Our 794-bed hospital is staffed by more than 4800 professional healthcare employees who serve a 27-county area throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Performs both routine and complex histologic techniques i.e. histochemistry immunohistochemistry in-situ hybridization and immunofluorescence on tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist to diagnose disease.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
*All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*
1. Performs all routine tissue preparation including routine cutting embedding slide preparation and staining using established departmental policies and procedures.
2. Following prescribed protocol with adequate orientation performs special procedures which require a complex network of steps and variables as well as all of the routine and repetitive tests in a high-volume anatomic pathology laboratory.
3. Recognizes problems identifies the cause (i.e. technical instrumental or physiological) and determines solutions following established departmental policies and procedures.
4. Assists the pathologist in making various examinations on submitted tissue specimens and collection and processing of tissue biopsies.
5. Performs records and maintains accurate quality control records.
6. Participates in establishing and monitoring quality assurance programs in the laboratory.
7. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures objectives quality assurance safety and infection control.
8. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous quality improvement.
9. Instructs new associates or students as required.
10. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development.
11. May act as a team leader as assigned in the absence of supervisor. Serves as a resource for department.
12. Participates in the design preparation and annual updating of procedure manuals.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Associates with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both) which may be obtained within or in addition to the associate degree OR Bachelors with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both) which may be obtained within or in addition to the baccalaureate degree.
Certification: HTL(ASCP) or HT(ASCP)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Personal Protective Equipment: Must be prepared to wear when necessary.
Physical Demands: Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens odorous chemicals carcinogens mutagens low-level radiation electrical hazards and flammable liquids. Must be able to move about laboratory and between workstations. Must be able to occasionally move lift and/or carry lightweight materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds up to 5% of the time.
