Job Description

We have an opening for a Spacecraft Engineer - Academic Graduate Appointee. You will work under the guidance of staff members to execute on experiments and activities in the areas of mechanical design design for manufacturing test process development structural analysis optomechanical development to support LLNLs Space Science and Security (SSSP) program. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position offers a full-time off-site work schedule.  You will collaborate and contribute through virtual interactions.  Occasional on-site presence to meet business needs may be required.

In this role you will 

  • Work under general guidance of staff mechanical and spacecraft engineers in areas such as mechanical design design for manufacturing test process development structural analysis and optomechanical development.
  • Use CAD software to design and virtually integrate spacecraft components as part of larger optomechanical assemblies.
  • Determine solutions to technical problems involving the processing and utilization of materials by reviewing scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques.
  • Disseminate results including methods developed and keep current on materials and manufacturing processes. development/characterization methods.
  • Collaborate with scientists engineers and technicians to accomplish research goals.
  • Participate in root cause analysis for potential issues on SSSPs payloads.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and patent applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
  • Experience in Mechanical Engineering demonstrated by coursework training and/or work experience.
  • Experience with Solidworks Creo or other CAD software packages.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (structural thermal electrostatic).
  • Experience conducting experiments related to the processing and characterization of materials.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment document analyses and prepare present and explain technical information and publications.
  • Effective interpersonal skills creativity and ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.           

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related technical field.
