Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Fire Science Instructor is responsible for delivering comprehensive instruction and effectively managing the Fire Science Program at the NCTA. This program aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for entry-level positions in fire science and emergency services. Additionally the program prepares students for a seamless transition into post-secondary education apprenticeship training and certification. The curriculum typically covers a range of foundational skills and knowledge including fire behavior firefighting techniques rescue operations emergency medical response and fire prevention.

There is an expectation to work the summer session if offered approximately 14 days for additional pay.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications Required

  • Satisfactory background clearance results (fingerprinting required); proof of ability to work in the United States.
  • Must hold a Washington State Career and Technical Education Teaching Certificate endorsed in Fire Science or a related field with 6000 hours of documented work experience. If a Washington State Certificate is not held the candidate must be willing to obtain a CTE Endorsement. Please work with the director on this piece.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and implement a work-based learning and internship program with the fire science and emergency services community.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and promote the NCTA Fire Science program.
  • Demonstrated punctuality work attendance record and satisfactory evaluations.
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification. (instructor status preferred)

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Evidence of experience working with program advisory committees and community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience or formal training in designing and delivering student leadership development programs.
  • Evidence of teacher training or experience that reflects interactive student-centered instruction using technology and realworld applications to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated success in maintaining a positive productive learning climate in the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  • Evidence of satisfactory experience in curriculum development classroom management and organization for routine detail.
  • Depending on assignment valid Washington State drivers license & district Type 2 drivers certificate may be required.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective classroom management. Strong organizational management verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated knowledge of the physical psychological and social characteristics of school-age students. Knowledge of or amenable to learn use and integrate the districts technology strategies systems and curriculum software programs as well as demonstrate knowledge of the Districts Technology Competencies. Demonstrated ability to plan implement and evaluate effective instructional activities in the areas of reading written language and mathematics to meet student needs and district goals. Demonstrated personal characteristics of flexibility commitment to accomplishment and enthusiasm for the profession. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff students and parents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach the NCTA Fire Science program in alignment with state-approved course frameworks.
  • Manage the CTE Dual Credit and/or College in the High School programs articulated with post-secondary institutions and other related CTE Dual Credit articulation and apprenticeship agreements.
  • Work with the appropriate advisory committee(s); attend all meetings and implement advisory committee recommendations.
  • Develop and coordinate both on-site and off-site student internship apprenticeship and work-based learning programs.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to align program competencies and expectations with district-approved program standards and state-approved frameworks.
  • Teach and assess related safety protocols within the program.
  • Prepare students for industry certification.
  • Coordinate ordering and enforcing professional attire for industry standards.
  • Be an advisor and provide opportunities for all students to participate in student leadership activities within the leadership component of the program. May require hours outside the regular school day.
  • Maintain a positive productive learning climate in the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  • Maintain open communication with parents students staff and administration.
  • Believe diversity is a strength and have the attitude that we will meet the needs of any child who enters our school.
  • Participate in the development of curriculum and incorporate technology into the instructional process.
  • Maintain program budget and participate in annual program planning.
  • Integrate business and community partnerships to enhance student learning.
  • Be a team player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with others.
  • Be innovative and committed to the challenge of change in education.
  • Be committed to success for all children.
  • Be flexible and cooperative in schedule changes and accommodating changes in facility use.
  • Participate in building-wide programs including teaching technology violence prevention multicultural education study and social skills and other professional development activities.
  • Participate positively and actively in a professional learning community that is characterized by collegiality shared responsibility for student success and perpetual focus on student learning.
  • Establish a safe welcoming and purposeful learning environment for all students colleagues families and guests.
  • Follow the NCTA Skills Center calendar including first and last days of school all holidays and breaks Professional Days Learning Improvement Days if available conference dates half days early releases late starts weather delays and cancellations professional days etc.
  • Use/learn computer technology i.e. Word Excel and PowerPoint electronic grading and attendance communication by email and the ability to implement computer skills into daily classroom instruction.
  • Implement the requirements of IDEA Section 504 and ADA in the education of students with disabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Mount Vernon School District employees are eligible for SEBB medical dental vision life insurance AD&D and long-term disability (LTD) coverage if they are anticipated to work 630 hours or more during the school year. Eligibility for retirement benefits applies to employees working 3.5 hours per day or more for five or more consecutive months.

We also offer optional tax-sheltered annuities including the Omni 403(b) and the Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave vacation leave (for 260-day employees only) and sick leave are prorated based on full-time employment status.
