Job Description

Grow Your Impact: Earn VI or DHH Certification Through New JP Schools-Utah Partnership

Jefferson Parish Schools is excited to launch a new partnership with the University of Utah to address immediate teacher shortages in the fields of Visual Impairment (VI) and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) education.

We are seeking currently certified Special Education teachers and Early Interventionists who are ready to expand their impact and help ensure all students receive the specialized support they deserve.

There is a growing shortage of educators qualified to serve students who are visually impaired or deaf or hard-of-hearing. These students have unique learning needs and this program is designed to equip dedicated educators with the tools and certification necessary to support them this selective program we will support:

  • 5 candidates for the VI cohort

  • 5 candidates for the DHH cohort
    (Two spots in each cohort are reserved for Early Childhood educators)

Program Overview:

  • Start Date:August 2025 (Coursework begins while participants remain in current roles for the 202526 school year)
  • Certification Completion:Summer 2026
  • Begin VI/DHH Teaching Roles:Fall 2026
  • Course Format:Online learning through the University of Utah including both live and self-paced sessions
  • Ongoing Support:Monthly or bi-monthly cohort sessions and professional development beginning in Fall 2026
  • Certification Outcome:Full state certification in Visual Impairment or Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing education

Position Description:


The Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for providing instruction to resource level Deaf and Hard of Hearing students consultation to students regular education teacher and other applicable school personnel order to maximize educational services andlearning potential of hearing-impaired students.


Scope of Responsibility:

  • Provides IEP directed educational services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Participates in the development of IEPs.
  • Facilitates services and identify needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in thegeneral education setting.
  • Requests materials and auditory equipment suitable for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Maintains regular contact with regular classroom teachers to help in preparation of teaching materials and tests.
  • Provides in-service training to all regular school personnel so that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are positively received in the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Director of Speech and Hearing Services.

Skills and Qualifications:
We seek detail-oriented independent self-starters who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising student achievement and who have a record of high performance in challengingsituations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate and/or possess:

  • Bachelors degree required and Louisiana teachers certification in the area of Hearing
  • Three years of experience in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the general education setting.
  • Possess the ability to trouble shoot equipment specifically designed for hearing impaired students which can include hearing aids cochlear implants sound field equipment and assistive listening devices.
  • Basic proficiency in sign language.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in multiple settings and have the ability to bean engaging change agent and culture-creator that can inspire and motivate.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws policies and regulations relevant to students.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and skilled in Google Suite.
  • Working knowledge telehealth platforms and experience in providing virtual teaching services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other professionals to obtain positive solutions.
  • Explicit knowledge of evidenced based practices.
  • High degree of professionalism with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.

  • Bilingual
  • Advanced Degree

Physical Involvement:


Sitting is a required part of each workday. Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing
walking reaching bending lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required. Ability to provide own
transportation to schools work locations and meeting sites. Mobility skills necessary to access a
variety of work locations.
