Role Overview
The role of the Specialist Counsellor is to provide highly specialised multi-session trauma counselling to adults and children who have been a victim of any personal and violent crime. Specialist Counsellors work with callers on an appointment-based system with sessions conducted via phone call. During sessions the Specialist Counsellor will conduct needs risk and safety assessments using psychological first aid and emotional support and providing appropriate referrals as determined by clinical protocols. This program uses a PTSD CBT and Recovery Model framework that prioritises trauma informed approaches. The role will also be required to support in the broader VictimConnect team at times answering calls and chats establishing caller safety building rapport and identifying best pathways for support either internally or externally.
Eligibility Criteria
- Bachelors degree in social work human services behavioural science or other relevant fields acceptable by DV Connect.
- 3 years experience in specialist trauma counselling or similar including supporting victim-survivors of domestic family and sexual violence.
- Demonstrated experience providing counselling support to both children and adults impacted by trauma or violence.
- Eligible to hold a membership with one of the following bodies of profession AASW ACA APS or PACFA
- Professional culturally sensitive and non-judgemental assessment skills.
- Ability to accurately type case notes during calls while ensuring database integrity and precision.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle high-stress situations calmly and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to build maintain and enhance relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including both sector and non-sector partners.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant practice frameworks and/or therapeutic models used in responding to victim/survivors of interpersonal trauma.
- Strong understanding of the gendered nature effects causes and dynamics of domestic family and/or sexual violence
- Provide supportive and culturally safe spaces for diverse groups including First Nations peoples individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds people with a diagnosed disability and members of the LGBTQI community.
