Job Description: HANKAMER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT (UGRA) PROGRAM

JOB FUNCTION:

  • The primary function of UGRAs is to support faculty research by contributing to the execution of research projects. Tasks can include conducting literature searches collecting organizing and cleaning data proofreading drafts of manuscripts and other aspects of the research process. For substantive contributions to a research manuscript authorship should be considered.
  • The UGRA program is not designed for a faculty member to have an extra set of hands available for various teaching and research tasks that might emerge. The working relationship is intended to center on a specific project or set of related projects that can be described to the student in discussing his/her potential participation.
  • GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
    An ideal UGRA is interested in research and is a conscientious hardworking student with strong attention to detail. Tasks include (but are not limited to):
    -Meeting with their assigned professor to learn about the research project and receive training on the research methodology.
    -Proofreading papers and conducting citation reference checks.
    -Conducting basic literature searches to locate existing studies and published scales.
    -Searching for data data scraping and cleaning.
    -Working with Qualtrics software to host surveys and communicate with participants.
    -Managing social media accounts associated with the research (i.e. participant recruitment and communication) including Prolific or Amazon MTurk platforms.
    -Helping enter or code data into Excel (or similar programs).
    -Coordinating data collection sessions in a behavioral lab.
    -Performing simple analyses
    -Student must complete a training course in Responsible Conduct of Research prior to employment. Time spent on training is paid and counts towards the ten hours per week.
  • JOB SKILLS (existing or willing to develop):
    - Hard/Specialized Skills: Use of research databases research software and survey platforms. - - Soft Skills: Ability to communicate with research participants and research-active professors.
  • LEARNING OUTCOMES
    - UGRAs will learn a great deal about design data collection and writing involved in research publishing. - UGRAs also may propose research ideas and receive feedback from faculty.
  • COMPENSATION AND HOURS:
    -$12/hour
    -10 hours a week
  • GUIDELINES FOR UGRA:
    Qualifications for Selection
    -Minimum GPA of 3.25
    -Demonstrated experience in several aspects of the job description
    -Aptitude for research
    -Business Student
    -Availability in schedule
    -Must have completed a FAFSA
  • PROCESS:
    Interested faculty should discuss their interest in a UGRA with their department chair.
    After receiving the support of their department chair faculty can apply for an UGRA to the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development (via ) by providing a one-page description of specific research project(s) with expected outcomes.
    • The identification of an UGRA can take two forms:
      1)An interested faculty member identifies a student who meets the basic qualifications. In such cases include the students name along with his/her major email and ID number.
      2)An interested faculty member does not have a student identified. In such cases provide any specific criteria beyond the basic qualifications in the application. UGRA availability will be determined by student interest and current department deployments of qualified students. If potential UGRAs are available one or more students will be forwarded to the faculty member for consideration.
    • The Deans office will facilitate the process of enrolling the UGRA for employment with the faculty member as his/her supervisor. The faculty member will maintain consistent communication with the UGRA and is responsible to monitor research work as well as making sure the hours worked does not exceed 10 hours per week. The Deans Excellence fund will pay 75% of the costs.
  • Provide lab/research support for assigned area of responsibility
  • Assist with various projects activities and tasks related to University laboratories and research
  • Adhere to and ensure safety procedures and precautions are followed
  • Ability to comply with University policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
