Job Description

Position: Facilities Technician - Electrician

Compensation starts: $32/hr

Position Summary:

The Facilities Technician - Electrician is a skilled full-time role responsible for maintaining the operational integrity of electrical systems across the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. This position splits its focus equally between electrical systems (50%) and general facilities maintenance and fabrication (50%). It involves installing maintaining and troubleshooting electrical systems and lighting as well as supporting aquarium-wide infrastructure projects. The Electrician works collaboratively with other departments to support animal welfare staff operations guest experience and special exhibit development.

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium provides learning opportunities for all levels interests and ages with the mission to inspire people to explore discover and learn about Earths diverse ecosystems since 1997. Home to more than 4000 animals representing 650 species the Aquarium features ecosystems from around the globe and is the largest in the Mountain West. The Aquarium has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 2019. With a major expansion nearing completion LLPA continues to set new standards in immersive science-based experiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Electrical Responsibilities (50%)

  • Install maintain troubleshoot and repair facility electrical systems including panels breakers circuits lighting systems and control components.
  • Support construction renovation and expansion projects involving electrical infrastructure for exhibits life support systems and facilities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on all electrical systems including emergency power and lighting.
  • Monitor and maintain electrical infrastructure supporting animal habitats exhibit lighting life support systems and guest/public safety systems.
  • Inspect electrical systems and components to ensure safe code-compliant and efficient operation.
  • Replace lamps ballasts fuses and other consumables per maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC OSHA AZA and Aquarium safety standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections repairs and parts used.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure operational and animal welfare standards are upheld.
  • Respond to urgent repairs and participate in after-hours or on-call rotations.

General Facilities Maintenance & Fabrication (50%)

  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks including carpentry drywall painting plumbing and exhibit installation.
  • Support fabrication projects including building repairing or modifying exhibits or facilities per written or verbal instructions.
  • Assist with landscaping irrigation and snow removal as needed.
  • Support upkeep of vehicles tools and equipment.
  • Maintain organized workspaces and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors to ensure project and repair completion per specifications.
  • Monitor and maintain building security and respond to emergency building issues.
  • Transport goods and equipment dismantle/install furniture and perform immediate cleaning tasks when necessary.
  • Support special projects exhibit development and aquarium expansion efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Utah State Journeyman Electricians License (Required)
  • Valid Utah drivers license (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school or certifications in other trades (e.g. HVAC plumbing) a plus
  • 3 years of experience in electrical systems within commercial or institutional environments preferred
  • Availability to work weekends holidays and after-hours shifts as needed.
  • Previous work in a zoo aquarium or facility with specialized environmental systems is highly desirable.

  • Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to interpret and work from technical drawings schematics and specifications
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently or on a team
  • High attention to detail safety awareness and professional demeanor
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a mission-driven collaborative environment

Physical Demands of the Job:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (Up to 100 lbs. with assistance)
  • Frequent standing bending climbing ladders and working in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Tolerance for working in hot cold humid and wet conditions.
  • Ability to climb/work at heights up to 150
  • Comfortable working around animals including in proximity to sensitive or dangerous species (with proper safety protocols in place).
  • Comfortable working in diverse environments (outdoor enclosures aquariums mechanical rooms).
