Job Description

OVERVIEW

Cache County is accepting applications for the position of Deputy County Attorney Attorney I. This is a full-time entry-level attorney position which will primarily involve prosecuting criminal violations of state and local law in the County. The Deputy County Attorney works under the direction of the County Attorney in conjunction with one or more Chief Deputy Attorneys but the Deputy County Attorney will have considerable latitude to exercise independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of the Deputy County Attorney are performed primarily in the office and the courtroom.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deputy County Attorneys duties will include among others the following:

  • Prosecuting felony and misdemeanor crimes;
  • Undertaking pre-trial preparation from reviewing police reports making charging decisions and engaging in witness/victim interaction handling pre-trial hearings and conducting legal research
  • Responding to legal questions from law enforcement agencies;
  • Performing legal research drafting pleadings gathering and analyzing evidence and preparing writs subpoenas warrants petitions affidavits and other legal documents;
  • Representing the State at arraignments bail hearings preliminary hearings trials sentencing and settlement negotiations;
  • Interacting mediating and negotiating with opposing counsel judges office staff other agencies and law enforcement officers;
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality in all cases and remaining in compliance with Utah Rules of Professional Conduct;
  • Interacting with county employees visitors and the general public effectively and professionally

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The Deputy County Attorney must have graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate Degree be licensed to practice law in the State of Utah (i.e. be a member of the Utah State Bar in good standing) compliant with continuing legal education requirements of the Utah State Bar; and succeed in a background investigation relevant to the position.
