Communications Officer - Competition # 2025-079

Grand Chiefs Office (GCO)

Category: Full-Time Appointment

Closing Date: July 30 2025


POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief of Staff and working in collaboration with the Communications team the Communications Officer will be responsible for writing editing and creating content for internal and external communications. The Communications Officer will work collaboratively to assist and coordinate communication materials for the public and media.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • Research on various First Nations topics political social and economic issues to provide accurate and updated content for press releases speeches talking points presentations and briefing notes.
  • Draft speeches that align with the Grand Chiefs views and beliefs.
  • Edit and revising communications correspondence based on feedback and new information.
  • Tailoring communication correspondence and tone to fit the audience.
  • Coordinates and administers media relations and assists in creating responses to incoming media inquiries and media outreach and distribution of AMC media releases.
  • Supports communication efforts during events including social media scheduling and posting content collection and media outreach.
  • Identifies potential new stories to cover on social media and track key social media and websites for content to share across AMC channels.
  • Ability to tell the story of an event capturing pictures and video on a smartphone tablet and camera.
  • Uses creativity and knowledge to plan and execute various communication campaigns that connect with citizens.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with stakeholders (First Nations and partners) on producing content in alignment with AMC strategies plans and services.
  • Develop and manage communications for leadership.
  • Oversee the preparation of public written material.
  • Publicize the GCO activities workshops meetings and other event purposes.
  • Monitor media to ensure we are keeping up to date.
  • Respond to written and oral inquiries.
  • Assist in the preparation of brochures reports newsletters and other materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Journalism Public Relations Creative Communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a similar role.
  • Journalism and public relations skills with strong multi-tasking ability.
  • Strong writing skills including experience in writing plain language.
  • High attention to detail with experience proofreading and copyediting materials before sharing with public audiences and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop written communication without the use of Chat GPT and other AI platforms.
  • Ability to write clearly and creatively within tight deadlines and adaptable to changing priorities and projects.
  • Experience creating engaging content for multiple audiences and across multiple platforms such as social media channels websites newsletters etc.
  • Clear understanding of target audiences and appreciation for the mission of the AMC Grand Chiefs Office.
  • Experience working with media.
  • Understanding of First Nations communities and a firm understanding of First Nations citizens living on and off reserve.
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of writing disciplines including language and culture.
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and analytic tools website design software graphics/editing software and other relevant software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work co-operatively as a part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Political acumen and able to be discreet when dealing with sensitive information.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with the ability to work extended shifts evenings and weekends as required.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 drivers license and a reliable vehicle.
