Position Description

The Manager Conflict Resolution and Investigations serves as a resource for informal and formal conflict resolution within the University community. This includes but is not limited to matters under the Harassment and Discrimination Policy Sexual Violence Response Policy and Violence in the Workplace: Prevention and Response Policy. The Manager reports to the Director Human Rights and Equity and is accountable to the Director People and Culture on employee-related matters.

The incumbent is responsible for providing a range of informal conflict resolution services including mediation facilitation and workplace assessments. They will also conduct internal investigations in matters involving formal complaints of sexual violence human rights violations workplace harassment and systemic issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acts as a central resource for university leaders on how to uphold statutory obligations related to preventing and responding to allegations of discrimination harassment sexual/gender-based violence.
  • Meets with individuals to discuss their concerns and explain options under the applicable policies statutes and collective agreements (both formal and informal). Obtains pertinent information from new contacts by performing necessary intake.
  • Conducts trauma-informed investigations involving cases of harassment discrimination and/or sexualized violence in accordance with the Harassment and Discrimination Policy Sexual Violence Response Policy or other University policies (as assigned).
  • Provides mediation and facilitation services to campus community members.
  • Provides guidance and training to community members on matters related to the Harassment and Discrimination Policy Violence in the Workplace: Prevention and Response Policy as well as other dispute resolution processes.
  • Works closely with leaders Human Rights and Equity People and Culture Student Life Campus Safety and Security and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office to address concerns.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. law psychology sociology peace and conflict studies) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters or law degree preferred.
  • Training in trauma-informed and restorative conflict resolution practices (or willingness to become trained).
  • Experience investigating allegations of harassment discrimination and/or sexual/gender-based violence. Experience in a post-secondary context preferred.
  • Proven ability to provide solution-focused interventions. Exceptional knowledge of various process and practices designed to respond informally to the broad concerns articulated by students faculty and staff (e.g. mediation processes effective communication processes).
  • Experience interpreting and applying policies collective agreements and the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act. Ability to apply human rights employment and occupational health and safety law as it pertains to preventing and responding to allegations of discrimination harassment and sexual/gender-based violence.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with highly sensitive matters.
  • Experience and/or training in supporting individuals in crisis and securing appropriate support.
  • Preference will be given to applicants eligible to practice law in Nova Scotia.
