BASIC FUNCTION
Provide support for research by conducting experiments collecting and analyzing results and performing operational duties associated with the laboratory (bench and field) animal or human research. Key areas of responsibilities include conducting research activities/experiments collecting analyzing and summarizing data preparing reports contributing to manuscripts/publications administrative and project management facilities and equipment management and supervision/staffing.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Research:
- Function as a specialist/technical expert in a specific discipline(s): otolaryngology and related research with focus in auditory neuroscience and translational treatments for auditory disorders.
- Investigate and perform critical analysis of current literature to develop novel approaches in conjunction with the principal investigator.
Conduct Experiments:
- Conduct complex experiments in specialized research discipline as described above.
- Present results/findings at lab departmental local and national meetings.
- Develop troubleshoot and formulate protocols and hypotheses in a specialized field/discipline.
- Develop and implement research plan in collaboration with PI.
Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts Publications:
- Contribute at a high level to the lab/research project as evidenced by documented recognition in publications as an author or for technical assistance.
- May independently write papers manuscripts and publish.
- Develop new methodology and techniques related to the area of research.
- Perform complex statistical analysis of data using advanced statistical methods and tools.
Administrative and Project Management:
- Oversee many of the administrative functions including but not limited to writing and amending protocols making decisions regarding the acquisition of equipment and supplies being responsible for the safety program and managing staff.
Facilities and Equipment Management:
- Determine needs of the lab and/or facilities.
- Gather and determine specifications for highly specialized equipment and procure lab equipment.
Supervision/Staffing:
- Provide training on basic lab techniques and protocols.
- Provide direction assignments feedback coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
- May participate in hiring staff and managing the performance of staff to assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years of related experience is required.
- Experience in translational/preclinical studies of pharmaceuticals for repurposing to new clinical indications
- Experience with techniques and assays that include: flowcytometry adenovirus transfection cell culture primary cell culture RNA isolation RT-PCR real time PCR DNA & RNA purification SDS-PAGE and Western blot.
