Description

The Eugene S. Pulliam School of Journalism and Creative Media in the College of Communication at Butler University invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track assistant professor of film production with an expected start date of August 2026. The successful candidate will teach classes in film and media production (both short form and feature-length) in television film and video. Knowledge of emerging visual media is a plus. In addition this faculty member will also offer classes in one or more of the following areas: entertainment producing; creative media business practices; field production; post-production techniques; narrative directing; and/or documentary producing and directing. Were looking for an energetic and collaborative faculty member to help shape new directions for our program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An MFA or a Ph.D. with accompanying applied experience in a field directly related to film production. ABD candidates will be considered and hired as a lecturer pending the completion of the terminal degree.
  • Potential for successful teaching of undergraduate courses in Create Media and Entertainment
  • Production experience directly related to film production
  • Potential for juried artistic exhibition related to media production and/or scholarship
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Expressed desire to provide equal opportunity for all students

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Successful experience in the following:
    • working collaboratively with others (e.g. committee service being part of a production team co-teaching)
    • working independently (e.g. supervising a production course development)
  • Experience producing directing or working on/with any of the following:
    • documentary films
    • narrative/feature films
    • commercial video projects
    • live production
    • news programming
  • Experience in visual effects work in programs like After Effects Blender and Fusion.
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching undergraduate film and/or media production courses
  • Record of juried artistic exhibition related to media production and/or scholarship
  • Experience connecting and collaborating with media industry professionals on the local regional and/or national levels
  • Promoting hosting and/or managing film festivals
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills

The College of Communication enrolls approximately 550 students across its 8 majors and online graduate program in Strategic Communication. CCOM is a dynamic and forward-thinking college that seeks to create an inclusive learning environment with a student-focused in the College have a typical teaching load of 4 courses per semester with an expectation for creative/professional activities.
