Job Description

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan design permit mitigate and restore for projects across our communities infrastructure systems open spaces and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California the Pacific Northwest and the Southeastern United States.

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is looking for an Archaeologist with a background in Bio-archaeology Osteo-archaeology or relatedin the Southern California Area with27 years of experience performing cultural resources archaeology and osteological field identification and analysis. Experience with faunal identification and analysis a plus as well as artifact processing cleaning research and writing cataloging accession and curation preparation. The successful candidate also may perform archaeological monitoring surveys testing and data recovery and recordation of archaeological and historic architectural resources. This is a full -time exempt opportunity. Qualified candidates must be local to Southern California and willing and able to work hybrid in-office 1-2 days a week from any Southern California ESA office.

Who You Are

  • You are a qualified and experienced Bio-archaeologist or Osteo-archaeologist to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to the analysis of human remains from archaeological contexts support fieldwork and post-excavation studies and assist in the interpretation and reporting of skeletal assemblages including faunal remains. As ancillary duties the selected candidate may manage and carry out archaeological investigations and technical document preparation on a wide range of interesting projects throughout the region and practice and will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes staff from our Water Energy Community Development Transportation and Airports practices.
  • You have experience with the analysis of human skeletal remains from archaeological sites including assessment of age sex stature pathology and trauma. Identification of human versus faunal remains experience in assisting with field excavations when required particularly in burial contexts conducting laboratory work including cleaning cataloging and storage of osteological and faunal materials. Experience with the maintenance of meticulous records and contributing to the curation and management of skeletal collections a plus.
  • Candidates must hold a bachelors degree or higher in archaeology geoarchaeology or closely related field and possess the ability to complete all phases of archaeological laboratory collections management as well as lead survey crews and produce well-written and technically supported cultural resources documents.
  • You are able to work collaboratively with clients and interdisciplinary teams to deliver projects on time and within budget in a fast-paced work environment.
  • You have excellent organizational and strong problem-solving skills required. Preference for candidates who have the knowledge interests & skillset to mentor and collaborate with junior staff members.
  • You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; andare able to lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outside in remote and rural settings as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include but may not be limited to work in all types of weather traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in vegetated environments agricultural fields arid lands and along stream banks. You may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions. Some early morning late night and/or weekend work as well as long hours may be required. Fieldwork may be up to one week per month.
  • Must have a valid drivers license to perform surveys and other work-related tasks as needed.

What You Will Do for ESA

  • Independently conduct artifact processing cleaning research cataloging accession and curation preparation of historical archaeological collections.
  • Independently manage and conduct archaeological resources assessments.
  • Lead archaeological resources survey.
  • Lead archaeological resources portions of multi-disciplinary projects engaged as part of a larger team of varied experts.
  • Manage and conduct archival research development of historical and cultural contexts archaeological survey and resource documentation resource evaluations and impacts analysis meeting CEQA and Section 106 requirements.
  • Serve as primary author of archaeological resource assessment reports.
  • Receive minimal direction for most tasks and receive direction on unusual or difficult assignments.
  • Supervision of small project teams.
  • Participate in and/or lead client meetings.
  • Prepare draft scopes of work and budgets for small and mid-size projects and for selected tasks on large projects.
  • Communicate with senior staff and teaming partners to support environmental analyses and permit compliance.
  • Collaborate with architectural historians paleontologists and other specialists and incorporate work products into technical reports.
  • Ad-Hoc tasks as needed

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individuals related experience education skills and the city in which the applicant lives.
