Job Description

Position Description:

In the MCWfusion curriculum all students will belong to learning communities consisting of 8-9 students of the same matriculation year and a faculty navigator. Learning communities will be utilized for small group teaching within the Good Doctor (Phase 1) early clinical learning courses Thriving During Clerkships (Phase 2) and Preparing for Residency (Phase 3) courses. Additionally faculty navigators will serve as personal/professional development coaches meeting with each of their students individually twice per semester through the end of their medical school career and reviewing their individual development plans and performance metrics.

Faculty navigators will be responsible for two learning communities (total of 8-18 students) takin a new learning community of 8-9 incoming students when one of their groups graduates.

Appointment begins September 1 2025.

Primary Functions

  • Promote collaborative learning environment to encourage supportive and effective small group education.
  • Serve as advocate for students success by developing trust and accountability between students and faculty navigator.
  • Facilitate small group discussion in their Learning Community for 2 hours approximately 2x/month in The Good Doctor Phase 1 course.
  • Review student reflections and provide feedback to student.
  • Review student-created individualized development plans including personal and professional goals during spiral weeks throughout all three phases and provide feedback.
  • Meet one-on-one with each student in their assigned learning community twice per semester wherein navigators:
  • Assist students in objectively reviewing their academic performance as well as their multisource feedback.
  • Guide students through identification of personal/professional goals and development of plans targeting these goals.
  • Coach students through success and adversity.
  • Continue meeting with students as they advance through the end of their medical school education. The scheduling and content may change based on student availability.
  • Participate in faculty development offerings pertinent to the navigator including preparatory sessions for coaching and small group facilitation.
  • Provide a minimum of 16 hours of additional educational service for the curricular team including OSCE grading and substitute facilitation in small group teaching sessions.
  • Provide feedback to leadership team on content student academic monitoring processes and learning community program development.
  • Consult with Academic Resources and Remediation Experts for focused student remediation and students (from another learning community) in their 4 early clinical Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) during Phase 1

Specifications

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

MD/DO applicants are preferred though qualified PhDs applicants will be reviewed. Preferred applicants will demonstrate:

  • Experience with small group facilitation or coaching in REACH the 4C coaching program the Continuing Professional Development course or a commensurate program.
  • A commitment to the educational mission.
  • Effective change management principles to influence and support key stakeholders (teaching faculty students staff and administrative leaders).

Key Attributes:

Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with a wide range of personalities and approaches.

Strong communication skills including listening and demonstrated ability to articulate complex challenging information clearly and concisely.

Knowledge and experience in coaching and advising.

Experience specific to medical education

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials standing or walking continuously.

Risk Potential

Little or no exposure to hazards such as dust fumes or extreme temperatures airborne or blood borne pathogens extreme temperatures or allergens.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust noise temperature changes or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.
