Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies**
NATURE OF WORK:The Correctional Cadet is used as an entry level position for high school/college students into the Montgomery County Sheriffs Office. Cadets are assigned to the Montgomery County Detention Facility. They will perform duties related to corrections work but do not require correctional officer authority. Correction cadets will experience on-the-job training to learn to enforce related to the protection of life and property crime prevention and clerk duties.Correction cadets will work in the Montgomery County Detention Facility providing assistance in areas that do not involve direct contact with the inmates of the detention facility.
Correction cadets will receive close direction from trained experienced correction officers and carry out their assignments in accordance with established operating procedures. During this period of employment correction cadets are periodically evaluated for efficiency general performance of duties and continued eligibility for appointment as a correctional officer trainee. If cadets are not successful in obtaining employment as a correctional officer trainee their employment as a cadet will be severed.
Successful correction cadets may apply as a correctional officers as soon as they have graduated with a high school diploma or received an acceptable equivalent and meet the required age of 19. Along with already satisfactorily passing the required physical polygraph examinations and having served a minimum of six months in the cadet program their work (see below) will be evaluated through observations conferences and reports. Lastly they must complete and pass the jail management course.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ANDABILITIES:
Ability to gain knowledge of theprinciples and practices rules and regulations found in Standard OperatingProcedures (SOP) and other manuals pertinent to the assigned jobclassification.
Possess strong community relationsskills to deal with a wide range of people including non-English speakingethnic persons and persons with medical conditions which may render themmentally unclear.
Ability to understand oral andwritten instructions to speak effectively and articulately to demonstrategood listening skills and to convey concern understanding and empathy.
Apply knowledge experience andreason to arrive at effective decisions for routine situations.
Ability to utilize a high level ofdiscretion good judgment and confidentiality.
Ability to complete workassignments and reports in a timely manner.
Ability to organize and determinepriorities of diverse assignments.
Ability to read and comprehendvarious documents.
Ability to maintain composure andwork effectively in situations of on-the-job pressure.
Ability to learn and applytraining provided by the agency or designated agency.
Ability to comprehend understandand adhere to at all times agency policies procedures rules andregulations.
Ability to become CPR and FirstAid Certified.
Possess a valid drivers license.
Operate agency vehicle inaccordance with established rules and regulations of this agency and the lawsof the State of Alabama
Ability to pass a comprehensivebackground investigation.
Ability to pass random drugscreening.
WORKING CONDITIONS: During the course of their work Cadetswill work in the Montgomery County Detention Facility providing assistance inareas that do not involve direct contact with the inmates of the detentionfacility.
