Job Description

Overview

Brengle Library supports cross-training and encourages shared responsibility among all staff to uphold the librarys mission and ensure seamless daily operations. Team members are expected to be adaptable collaborative and proactive in maintaining a high standard of service.

In furtherance of the mission of theCollege for Officer Training the library team supportsSalvationist scholarshipand thedevelopment of men and women for Salvation Army ministrythrough the provision of excellence in library services. Brengle Library is committed to meeting professional standards for academic libraries as set by theAssociation of Christian Librarians (ACL) theAssociation of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and theAccreditation Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC).

Responsibilities

Management

  • Work 3540 hours per week during the academic year Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday coverage as needed.
  • Open and close the library at designated times.
  • Ensure the library remains a clean welcoming and quiet space for study and reflection.
  • Monitor library facilities and coordinate with maintenance and housekeeping as necessary.
  • Oversee office equipment (printers scanner copier) including paper and toner replenishment.
  • Order and maintain supplies for the office coffee station and first aid kit.
  • Manage the cash box and deposit funds from fines and book sales.
  • Oversee student (cadet) library detail team and volunteers under the direction of the librarian.
  • Maintain the Circulation Desk Manual and update the Library Operations Manual for your area of responsibility.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with library practices and standards.

User Services

  • Manage the circulation desk providing services in both English and Spanish in person and online.
  • Assist users with circulation reference and general inquiries.
  • Create and maintain user accounts item types and circulation settings in the library system.
  • Generate monthly overdue and fine reports.
  • Check in materials during opening and closing shifts.
  • Curate and maintain book displays and bulletin boards.
  • Oversee re-shelving and ensure proper shelf-reading of books and periodicals.
  • Maintain the physical order and appearance of book stacks periodical shelves and archived materials.
  • Develop familiarity with the training program and curriculum especially in Salvation Army Doctrine History Biblical Interpretation and Homiletics to provide informed reference support.
  • Maintain curriculum files and enhance the quarterly deadlines list with assignment descriptions.
  • Update the Guides document in the User Services Manual each quarter.
  • Manage course reserves including electronic reserves.
  • Maintain the conference room booking sheet.
  • Participate in library orientation sessions for cadets.

Technical Services

  • Prepare and submit quarterly statistical reports.
  • Manage orders and distribution of Salvation Army publications.
  • Submit claims for missing periodical issues.
  • Oversee check-in processing and distribution of periodicals.
  • Handle the physical processing of new books.
  • Compare syllabi and course catalogs with the library collection to identify gaps.
  • Manage preservation and repair of library materials.
  • Participate in inventory and shelf-shifting projects during the summer.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Must actively pursue a Library Assistant Certificate.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to working within the mission of Brengle Library and the College for Officer Training (CFOT).
  • Must be reliable detail-oriented and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills a positive attitude toward all people and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Strong computer skills are required; experience with web-based tools or platforms is preferred.
  • Willing and able to learn and represent The Salvation Armys denominational distinctives in order to effectively assist students regardless of personal faith perspective.
