About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service is offering a unique opportunity for a Joint Management Coordinator (Aboriginal Identified) to join the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment flora fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977).
This position supports the Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park Board of Management in overseeing the Aboriginal owned Gaagal Wanggaan National Park. Established in 2010 the board has a proud history of managing the national park in accordance with Gumbaynggirr cultural lore and customs through a lease agreement. Since its creation the board has successfully achieved outcomes such as increasing Aboriginal employment the buying back of country with cultural significance to add to the park and facilitated opportunities for Gumbaynggirr people to practice culture on Country. Through the assistance of this Joint Management Coordinator (JMC) role the board implements governance policies and procedures to a high level. In collaboration with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) the board recently exhibited a draft plan of management for the national park outlining their plan for the future management of this culturally significant park. Gaagal Wanggaan National Park protects important coastal habitats and threatened species and provides nature and cultural experiences for the whole community. This position reports to the NPWS Manager Coffs Coast Area and works with a team of rangers field staff and project managers to both support the board and manage the park.
About You
The board and NPWS are looking for an experienced and passionate Aboriginal person with experience in working with boards or committees to achieve outcomes for Aboriginal community and Country. You will bring a strong interest in supporting a Board of Management and work alongside its members to strategically manage the Gaagal Wanggaan National Park. This includes an understanding of board and committee governance and policy arrangements. To succeed in this role you will need strong administrative governance organisational and writing skills. As a manager of staff you will also bring skills in communication policy development and a strong commitment to developing and supporting staff.
Managing a jointly managed national park requires you to work closely with the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal community to develop and implement a shared vision for their Country. You will also have skills in working closely with colleagues to form a team and to assist in ensuring Aboriginal cultural values are celebrated and protected across the landscape. Importantly you will bring to the role enthusiasm a willingness to learn from Elders and community to manage Country in a cultural way.
Essential Requirements As detailed in the Role Description
- This is an identified role under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role. Aboriginal identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:
- is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and
- identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and
- is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
- Demonstrated experience in project development implementation and management.
- Knowledge of Joint Management arrangements and use of public estate in order to ensure that the cultural heritage public safety and flora and fauna remain protected; understanding of environmental issues and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage management.
- Current Australian Drivers Licence and willingness to fly in light aircraft.
