SUMMARY:

TheObstetric (OB) clinical instructor performs as the expert in the clinical setting and is entrusted with imparting the knowledge and skills each student needs to be successful by providing quality delivery of assigned courseswhileensuringthatallstudentsbecome competent in the course objectives. Instructors evaluate and resolvestudentquestionsissuesandproblemsandensure appropriate action is taken to the satisfactionofthestudentDorseyCollege and/or regulatory agencies in compliance with policy fair and impartial creative dedicatedandprofessional.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan prepare and deliver quality instruction in clinical lecture and/or laboratory (if applicable) format based on the approved course outline by selecting and utilizing a variety of approved course materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities to ensure that the needs of individual students in the program are met.
  • Assess student learning using appropriate methods.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness with strong outcomes in student retention student success and student attendance as measured by the faculty development program.
  • Instruct students in the principles and application of physical biological and psychological subjects related to the role of the PN/RN as necessary.
  • Plan and coordinate daily learning experiences that individualize both student and client needs.
  • Provide learning opportunities that enhance student development in the application of the nursing process interpersonal skills acquisition and technical procedures.
  • Provide guidance and education to PN/RN students on problem solving and effective communication between co-workers patients and patient family members across a variety of cultural ethnic and socioeconomic levels.
  • Participate in campus-wide orientation of RN/PN students.
  • Supervise and monitor students on an ongoing basis as they perform technical and patient care skills.
  • Oversee and assess patient status on an ongoing basis to assure appropriate learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations Academic Clinical Liaison and the Director of Nursing to monitor student progress.
  • Motivate students by demonstrating sensitivity for concerns and actively involving students in clinical setting discussions and/or activities.
  • Advise students on attendance grades and issues throughout the module and mid-term to ensure successful completion of their clinical.
  • Complete Note to Files (NTFs) in a timely manner as directed by the Director of Clinical Operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of students time and attendance evaluations experiences performance and progress. Report any/all concerns to the Director of Clinical Operations.
  • Consults with the Director of Clinical Operations and the Director of Nursing regarding actions to be taken with students who are in jeopardy and/or whose performance does not meet clinical standards.
  • Collaborates with medical and nursing personnel to evaluate and improve teaching techniques throughout the externship module. Makes recommendations for improvement of the clinical experience.
  • Participates in the development of procedures clinical protocols and forms as requested by the Director of Clinical Operations.
  • Manage clinical setting environment through compliance with campus policies including but not limited to clinical setting management attendance punctuality and professionalism.
  • Ensure instructor preparedness before class by completing required information on the course syllabus to include keeping students abreast of applicable updates.
  • Monitor and prepare supplies and equipment to ensure readiness prior to clinical informing the Director of Clinical Operations when areas requiring attention are discovered.
  • Participate in faculty staff committee and in-service meetings. Attendance at commencement is strongly encouraged.
  • Demonstrate professional growth in the subject in which you teach through a combination of several of the following activities: membership and participation educational associations professional organizations continuance of education concurrent related business experience educational research and awareness of current practices and standards. Attendance at seminars conventions field visits vendor shows equipment exhibits etc. are excellent opportunities for instructors to gain enrichment. Professional writing by an instructor is also an example of professional growth.
  • Ensure that all educational activity is conducted in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Maintain employer relationships by at least annual contacts with employers; both visits can be virtual either via zoom or telephone conversation. Documented visits will be completed on the Liaison Form.
  • Facilitate all clinical courses included in the curriculum if OB is not available and/or when necessary; except Pediatrics unless experienced.
  • **Other related tasks as assigned and deemed necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MustdocumentandmaintaincurrentunencumberedMichiganlicensureasaregisterednurse(RN)
  • Experience in Obstetrics is required. Examples: Labor and Delivery background and/or caring for Childbearing mothers as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or a comparable position.
  • Mustholdaminimumofabachelorsdegreeinnursingscience (BSN) or be anindividualwithanassociate degreeinNursing(ADN)whoisactivelypursuing aBachelorsDegreeinNursing(BSN) facilitated by an LPN or higher or a bachelors degree in the subject taught. Documented enrollment in BSN program required. Exception paperwork must be submitted with the Michigan Board of Nursing (MBON) prior to instructor teaching.
  • One year of documented clinical teaching experiencerelatedtothecoursetaught preferred.

WORKING / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • May be required to work late and occasional weekends to support business needs.
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to see talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit for extended periods of time; and have sufficient hand arm and finger dexterity to operate a phone computer keyboard and other office equipment.
