Idaho Power located in vibrant Boise Idaho is looking for a Water Resources Specialist Entry or Specialist to join our Power Supply team. Its an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon and were working hard to provide our customers with the safe reliable affordable energy they depend on. While this position is based at Idaho Powers downtown Boise location we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote. Relocation assistance may also be provided to the successful candidate.

What does a Stream Gaging Water Resources Specialist do for us

Under specific direction they provide technical assistance to the Stream Gaging group in the Water Resources and Merchant Department. They work with specialized instrumentation and software applications that are required to operate and maintain our stream gaging network. They will perform data collection analysis and calibration of our stream gaging network and report results in written and verbal forms.

Specialist level will also require specialized knowledge and experience using stream gaging equipment for field data collection.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Water or natural resource data collection
  • Operating and maintaining stream gaging stations or other scientific equipment including installing calibrating and troubleshooting dataloggers sensors and radio telemetry
  • Basic surveying equipment and procedures for operation

Preferred:

  • The hydrologic characteristics of the Snake River basin
  • USGS guidelines for stream gaging database management computer programming equipment used to measure streamflow
  • Performing surveying at gage stations utilizing differential leveling

Skills in:

  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Operating and maintaining field equipment for gathering and analyzing scientific data
  • Use of computers and software related to position
  • Proficient with spreadsheets word processing database applications data acquisition transmission processing storage and display
  • Using hand and power tools related to shop or field
  • Maintain effective working relationships work both independently and on project teams
  • Organization and project management
  • Planning report writing coordinating and problem solving

Preferred:

  • Operating and maintaining stream gages collecting stream data in all flow ranges and compiling an annual record including proper application of gage height and shift corrections

Ability to:

  • Manage coordinate and complete project tasks
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Work both independently and on project teams
  • Develop alternatives and work with others to meet company needs
  • Analyze datasets and databases
  • Draft written and oral reports
  • Troubleshoot scientific data collection equipment in the field

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Entry Water Resources Specialist

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree in natural science engineering computer science hydrology hydrogeology environmental science water resources physical science electronics or similar field

Experience:

  • 2 years technically related job specific experience

OR

  • A bachelors degree in related field

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
  • Must obtain FirstAid/CPR card within 90 days

Preferred:

  • First Aid/CPR training

Water Resources Specialist

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree in natural science engineering computer science hydrology hydrogeology environmental science water resources physical science electronics or similar field

Experience:

  • 4 years of technically related job specific experience

OR

  • A bachelors degree in a related field with 2 years of technically related experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days

Preferred:

  • First Aid/CPR training


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Job performed is partially in an office environment working with a computer and partially in field work that may be 12-hour days including four wheel driving truck and boat travel. Position requires bending stooping squatting twisting kneeling reaching balancing; occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; rarely lifting above shoulder up to 30 lbs.; ascending/descending hillsides; ascending towers up to 15 feet; getting into and out of boats; vehicle and/or boat operations. The field work may include long hours in outdoor adverse weather conditions. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate exam. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This job may require extended travel including overnight stays.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Office workshop and/or remote field environment. Job is approximately 50% in an office and/or workshop environment and 50% field work that may require 12-hour days including occasional aircraft snowmobile UTV four-wheel drive truck and boat travel. Field work may include long hours in adverse weather conditions travel to remote locations periodically requiring overnight stays. Requires use of special PPE clothing or gear such as boots waders gloves life jackets hard hat etc.
