Description:

The School of Music Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a clinical assistant professor of music therapy for a full-time benefits eligible non-tenure track position beginning in fall 2025. The position is an academic year (nine month) non-tenure track position. This position will be located on the Tempe campus.

The School of Music Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University prepares artists scholars visionaries and entrepreneurs to become creative leaders who transform society through their art. The ASU music therapy curriculum is built on innovative and integrative music theory research flexible musicianship clinical and community-based applications. We offer the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy a two-year Master of Music degree for board-certified music therapists and a three-year Master of Music degree for students seeking certification plus a masters degree. We seek a creative innovative and community-oriented music therapist with strong musicianship and clinical skills who is interested in preparing the next generations of music therapists.

Our new music therapy clinic opened in August 2024 and consists of eight small treatment rooms and three large treatment rooms. The clinic contains an instrument storage space with a variety of rhythm and melodic instruments for students to use in class and in practicum settings. An observation room is connected to all clinic session rooms enabling students and supervisors to observe live sessions.

Our next full-time colleague will oversee the clinical training program the music therapy clinic and teach foundational music therapy classes across the bachelor and masters degree programs. The clinical training program for students consists of observations pre-internship practicum experiences and national roster and university affiliated internships. Clinical training happens in the community as well as in music therapy clinic on the Tempe campus. Music therapy is thriving in the Tempe area with many music therapists serving as practicum supervisors and internship directors for our students. The candidate will have opportunities to build programming and services for the community and further develop relationships with community partners for student practicum experiences. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing theASU Charterand realizing ASUs Design Aspirations.



Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in music therapy or related field
  • MT-BC credential
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or in supervising and mentoring students in practicum or internships
  • Meet requirements for undergraduate and graduate faculty and pre-internship supervision as stipulated by the AMTA Standards for Qualifications and Staffing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and/or supervise effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Varied background in clinical practice as a music therapist and/or advanced training in a music therapy practice (e.g. Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Developmental Music Therapy Guided Imagery and Music Music Psychotherapy Neurologic Music Therapy Medical Music Therapy etc.).
  • Demonstrated interest in innovative course development and/or creative approaches to teaching.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing community partnerships projects.
  • Ability to provide instruction in hybrid and online environments.
