About The Office of the Public Defender
With over 400 employees the Office of the Public Defender is the largest of the five indigent defense offices in Maricopa County. We are also one of the largest public defender offices in the country. Our office provides innovative client-centered legal representation in the full range of criminal matters to clients unable to afford legal counsel. We Require
Bachelors degree in behavioral or social science or a related field
Two years of casework experience within a criminal justice social service or court agency
OR
Post-secondary education above the listed minimum requirement may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Valid Arizona drivers license upon hire
We Also Value
Casework within a public defender organization an Arizona criminal justice agency an Arizona court department or a probation department
Experience with identification of mental health symptoms exposure to trauma physical/neurological defects or drug/alcohol use
Experience working directly with mitigation
Job Contributions
Interview client/family and interested parties to assist in the development of treatment/sentencing plans
Present and/or submit reports to courts and testify in court
Conduct assessments and conferences attend case staffings provide input regarding clients needs and make suggestions regarding treatment and disposition
Make and monitor referrals to provide follow-up and intervention
Assess clients social and medical histories psychological evaluations educational and legal documents
Locate residential treatment and outpatient treatment programs as a resource for clients
Arrange for the client to be interviewed by an agency and present a summary of findings in court
Network with individuals and community agencies for access to social educational and employment resources for clients
Prepare correspondence social histories report and submit social histories to psychologists and attorneys
Working Conditions
Handling multiple or complicated tasks accuracy and decision-making may be constant occurrences
Traumatic subject matter (crime scenes accidents etc.); interruptions; time pressures; high volume of work; frequently changing tasks; concentration/vigilance; teamwork; working in close physical proximity with others; and public contact may be frequent occurrences
Work environment will be within the office jails and the courts
Travel to and from court locations government facilities and other job-related locations as necessary which may include periodic travel outside of Maricopa County subject to County policies regarding vehicle use
