Job Description for Director of Religious Education and Pastoral Assistant to the Pastor
Christ the Good Shepherd Parish

Christ the Good Shepherd Parish and St. John Paul II Classical Catholic School seeks a highly motivated individual to act as its Director of Religious Education. There are many opportunities for dynamic growth and professional advancement especially as the school deepens its classical curriculum and the parish seeks to advance opportunities for its parishioners to grow in knowledge of the Catholic faith.
The DRE and Pastoral Assistant will support both the parish and school in:
- Concurrently running the catechetical program from grades 1-8 with special attention for the 2 Sacramental preparation years (grade 2 for First Holy Communion and grade 8 for Confirmation) and assisting the principal and teachers of the school with teaching the Catholic Faith.
- Running the parish Order of Christian Initiation of Adults and collaborating with this programs catechists.
- Offer appropriate youth ministry via programming and other events.
- Assisting the Pastor and other appropriate parish staff in teaching disseminating explaining and supporting the Catholic Faith.
- Assisting the parish in the planning and executing of parish and school liturgies (Baptismal Prep Marriage Prep the coordination of liturgical ministers and funerals).
- Planning and executing other catechetical and spiritual events for the parish and school as needed.
This position also carries the following responsibilities:
- Acts as a resource for parish programs in the area of evangelization and catechesis.
- Develops programs and budgets to support programs.
- Manages their office in conjunction with the Parish and School.
- Plans and holds regular meetings with catechetical staff.
- Is responsible for the recruitment and formation of catechists in accord with current Archdiocese of Detroit policies.
- Is in constant communication with all stakeholders in the parish and school to achieve its goals and objectives.
- Works collaboratively with the Pastor and other parish and school staff.
- Attends appropriate Parish and Vicariate meetings and functions.
- Works some evenings and some Saturdays/Sundays as well as attending and planning appropriate liturgies (for example First Holy Communion Confession Confirmation).
- Records appropriate Sacraments in the Parish Registers.
This position requires:
- That one be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the church.
- The ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in sensitive pastoral scenarios and ministry.
- The ability to communicate effectively with all staff (phone email and other written communications).
- Completion of and certification in Protecting Gods Children.
- The completion of a background check with discussion of any possible issues with the Pastor.
- A formal training in Catholic theology and faith (either an associate bachelor or masters degree in Catholic catechesis or theology and/or Archdiocese of Detroit catechist certification).
- The candidate be a self-starter and has the ability to effectively collaborate with groups but also work independently without micromanagement.
The position is salaried and exempt. Benefits are available through the Michigan Catholic Conference. Sick-time paid time off and vacation time are stipulated in the parish handbook.
Salary range: $45000-$55000. Based on qualification experience and motivation.
