Job Description

All camps share a common purpose: creating an environment where Young Life staff bring Christ to life by creatively presenting the complete gospel of Jesus Christ. Speaking clearly from the Scriptures camp speakers introduce kids to the person of Christ the nature of humanity the work of Christ on the cross the hope of the resurrection and the opportunity for reconciliation with God.

Essential Duties:

Operation and Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute landscape maintenance on a daily basis to keep the property in top condition; utilize time and resources effectively without interfering with normally scheduled camp operations.

  • Develop and execute a preventative maintenance program for the landscape on the property in coordination with the Site and Facilities superintendent.
  • Assist in the development and construction of the property. The range of projects will be from creating small planting beds to landscaping around entire buildings.
  • Be able to respond to urgent and unscheduled needs of guests and operational emergencies.
  • Maintain all aspects of the irrigation system and install new irrigation areas as needed.
  • Maintain the turf fields shrubbery flowers and all other landscape on the property.
  • Maintain shop areas in a well-organized manner with regular cleaning schedules; repair and maintain tools and equipment in good working order; keep a good supply of materials on hand for routine maintenance of landscape.
  • Work toward the specific implementation of individual property goals as outlined yearly.
  • Maintain a list of maintenance projects and capital projects to be undertaken as time and money become available; communicate the needs reflected in these lists to the Site and Facilities superintendent for budgeting and scheduling. Execute or assist with these projects as directed.
  • Cooperate with other property staff and subcontractors in these processes as that is very important.
  • Work closely with the Site and Facilities superintendent to ensure that tasks are being performed up to standards in proper priority in a timely manner and in harmony with the rest of the camp operations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Site and Facilities superintendent.
  • People Management
    Operate and maintain the property in a manner consistent with the instructions received from the Site and Facilities superintendent and the property manager.
  • Offer leadership and direction to those workers assigned to you.
  • Supervise such staff as the Site and Facilities superintendent may assign to you both summer and winter staff. This includes full and/or part-time property staff in addition to summer maintenance staff work crew volunteers and other people who may be assisting with a maintenance or project function of the property.
  • At all times maintain a pleasant and positive attitude toward staff and others involved in the program conveying the idea of maximum service consistent with the capabilities of the property and equipment.
  • Work closely with the work crew and summer staff boss(es) in making the work experience a positive time of personal growth for the individuals who have volunteered their time.
  • Reports Record Keeping and Maintaining a Budget
  • Prepare and submit reports as the Site and Facilities superintendent requests.
  • Maintain operating records as required by the Site and Facilities superintendent. These include but are not limited to:
  • Landscape training and audit checklist.
  • Grass cutting log.
  • Preventative maintenance records for the grounds.
  • Safety equipment records.
  • Maintenance records for landscape and irrigation system etc.
  • Initiate purchase orders and track invoices related to personal tasks.
  • Comply with the requirements of budgets supplied by the Site and Facilities superintendent.
  • Assist in preparation of capital and operating budgets as requested by the Site and Facilities superintendent.
  • Relationships
  • Realize that being on property staff involves a balanced mix of relational and business ministry and that people and tasks are both important.
  • Maintain relationships (property staff field staff volunteers and community) at the highest level of integrity.
  • Relate to the local community in a manner best suited to carry out the public relations policy of Young Life as presented by the property manager.
  • Work closely with the Site and Facilities superintendent Guest Services coordinator and assigned staff on all matters involving use of the property for the program.
  • Cooperate with all other departments on the property to operate as a team by being open and supportive of each other to produce a well functioning body.
  • Maintain an open posture when dealing with problems conflict and staff relations.
  • Effectively give and receive instructive criticism.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires that the staff person be able to: lift at least fifty (50) pounds of materials waist high operate mowers tillers and other equipment necessary for landscaping and lawn care stand on his or her feet for at least eight hours a day bend twist carry and do other physical activities necessary to perform this job.
  • The majority of the job will take place out of doors and the staff person will be exposed to heat cold and various climate conditions as well as dirt and chemicals used in landscaping.

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in horticulture.
  • Working knowledge of landscape design and care.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new situations and technologies.

Experience Required For The Job:

  • Proven ability to work with guests in ways that enhance the guests experience at the property.
  • Proven ability in organizing and supervising people and tasks.
  • Proven hands-on experience with a minimum of four years in the area of landscape development and maintenance to include irrigation.
  • Must have a personality that is conducive to good relations: outgoing positive flexible.

Responding to the unexpected needs of a guest in a prompt and professional manner is important. All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community and be able to work with and minister to the volunteer high school- and college-age young people who attend our camp.

Job Specific Working Conditions:

  • Trail West is located just outside of in Buena Vista Colorado. Though Buena Vista is a small town it has all of your necessities and a lot of outdoor activities to explore.
  • The Trail West team is looking for high capacity and fun-seeking ministers of the gospel who desire to serve on a camp staff. As a staff at Trail West Lodge we prioritize professional personal and spiritual development for all team members & we are committed to providing a high level of hospitality to all our guests.
  • Salary Range - $38192.00 - $47797.50
  • This position is eligible for 7% COLA and potentially a housing stipend.
