Description

FamilySearch has been capturing and digitizing Chinese clan genealogies for many years. These records are called Jiapu. We have a team that is dedicated to creating and improving the metadata associated with these records. The mission of this position is to help Church members fulfill their divinely appointed responsibility to discover their families through family history methods submit their names to the temple for saving ordinances and to help bring souls unto Christ.



Responsibilities
  • The tasks associated with position will be to review and improve Jiapu metadata which include the following categories: Jiapu Image and metadata audit Metadata analysis metadata analysis and Metadata organization and enhancement etc.

  • Supporting Functions: The main task performed in this position will be to review and capturemajor fields of metadata. Some of the major fields include localities year ranges volume levels Jiapu Title surname and major ancestor as well as others. The Metadata Specialist will review carefully the Jiapu images and existing Metadata to enter the system. We have Metadata standards and tools to reach these standards that we will train the Metadata Specialist in.



Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors degree in computer science information technology history or a related field.
  • Excellent data analysis and research skills.
  • Ability to read write and speak Chinese (Simplified and traditional) language fluently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (with internal and external stakeholders) both written and oral communications (in English and Mandarin Chinese).
  • Knowledgeable in the history and geographical jurisdictions of China with good comprehension in reading ancient Chinese records.
  • Familiarity with the Family History Library Catalog and FamilySearch.
  • Skilled in the use of standard desktop software including Word and Excel.
  • There will be tests on Jiapu reading and Excel ability.

Preferred

  • Masters degree in geography library and information sciences or other related field
  • Proficiency in one or more non-English languages
