About the Opportunity
Join Contentful as a backend engineer (f/m/d) to work on our database layer as part of the Content Storage team. This role focuses on enhancing and maintaining the platforms core content storage and retrieval capabilities.
At Contentful we empower thousands of customers to manage and serve content at scale with speed flexibility and reliability. Team Content Storage owns the database schema and access patterns and is responsible for ensuring the fast reliable and scalable content storage and retrieval. You will be working as part of a high-impact team which provides foundational work powering our REST and GraphQL APIs which serve billions of requests per month.
What to expect
- Join a team that is central to Contentfuls content platform working on projects that directly impact the companys strategic goals.
- Design build and maintain systems using Postgres and Go that must be highly available reliable secure and scalable.
- Implement performance optimizations: Identify query patterns analyze query plans and work on solutions to make query patterns faster.
- Collaborate closely with the other members of your team as well as across team borders to improve the reliability and scalability of how content is stored.
- Make data-driven decisions regarding feature improvements as well as performance and security concerns.
- Identify and resolve issues quickly to maintain high customer satisfaction.
- Participate in shaping our team to help enhance our ways of working and our development processes as well as our domain and its components.
- Use Terraform and infrastructure-as-code best practices to manage AWS and Kubernetes resources.
What you need to be successful
- Demonstrable experience as a backend software engineer in a product development environment.
- Strong skills in TypeScript/JavaScript and . Interested in clean code practices and design patterns.
- Experience working with SQL databases ideally PostgreSQL.
- A collaborative mindset: Youre helpful respectful and enjoy sharing knowledge. You have strong teamwork skills are open to diverse opinions and are able to give reasons for your technical decisions.
- Comfortable debugging across different layers and interested in identifying and fixing database-level performance bottlenecks.
- Ability to distinguish between tasks that allow fast iteration and tasks whose sensitivity requires slowing down testing thoroughly validating assumptions and rolling out changes carefully.
- Experience with working in an agile environment passionate about operational excellence and coding best practices.
- Familiarity with automated deployment processes (CI/CD) and version control (Git).
- Excellent English communication skills both verbal and written (German is not required).
- Ability to context-switch navigate ambiguity and prioritize effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- You embrace a culture of safe experimentation and continuous improvement and are ready to mentor others regardless of title.

Preferred:
- Experience in delivering enterprise-scale distributed systems REST APIs and event-driven architectures.
- Hands-on experience working with Postgres databases especially RDS and Aurora.
- Knowledge of SQL performance tuning e.g. indexing strategies and analyzing query plans.
