Job Description

The Equity Alliance (501c3) and The Equity Alliance Fund (501c4) are seeking a
passionate and dedicated Advocacy Manager to lead and coordinate advocacy
initiatives that promote equity justice and social change across Tennessee. The
Advocacy Manager will play a pivotal role in holding government officials
accountable organizing community engagement driving rapid response efforts
lobbying managing candidate recruitment and building coalitions. This position
requires a dynamic individual who can effectively mobilize community members
manage advocacy campaigns and foster partnerships to create a lasting impact.


Responsibilities


Advocacy Strategy Development

  • Collaborate with leadership to develop comprehensive advocacy strategies alignedwith The Equity Alliance and The Equity Alliance Funds missions and priorities.
  • Create actionable plans to hold government officials accountable influence policydecisions and drive positive change.



  • Research emerging and existing policy trends that affect our core communities.
  • Submit a weekly report on research findings and the status of current projects.
  • Join weekly communications meetings to give updates on advocacy initiatives and communicate with the event and marketing coordinator to ensure cohesion between c3 to c4 communications and upcoming campaigns.
  • When unexpected bills that need immediate attention and issue advocacy arise the Advocacy Manager will work with the leadership TEAm to determine what those priorities should be and provide swift notice when a rapid response is needed.

Community Engagement and Mobilization

  • Organize and lead efforts to engage community members in advocacy initiativesincluding attending key local and state meetings hearings and events.
  • Develop and implement strategies to mobilize community participation and ensureunderrepresented voices are heard.
  • Plan and execute the itinerary for TEAs annual Day on the Hill.
  • Social Media Content Creation
    • 3 weekly social media posts including but not limited to:
      • Educational posts ie. bill updates voter registration reminders and announcements and election day announcements.
      • Live from the capitol social media legislative updates weekly once per week.
      • Weekly live tweets from council county commission and legislative committee meetings to keep community members informed and engaged on whats happening legislatively across the state.
    • C4 social media posts regarding candidate endorsements and campaign initiatives.
  • Newsletter
    • Advocacy Newsletter Section
      From the Bull Horn twice weekly updates from on the ground to be provided to the event and marketing coordinator the day before a scheduled newsletter.
    • 1- Advocacy-specific newsletter on the third Wednesday of each month providing updates about our wins initiatives policy and bill updates
    • 1- C4 Advocacy-specific newsletter on the first Wednesday of each month providing updates on the first and third Wednesday of each month on candidates candidate initiatives legislative updates bill updates etc.
  • Website Updates
    • Advocacy blog monthly blog posts that summarize the advocacy newsletter each month as the steady drumbeat.
    • Updating the C4 website with candidate endorsements C4 advocacy issues and calls to action.
  • TN Voter Guides
    • Work with the director of growth and engagement to manage the completion of the Tennessee Voter Guides which includes gathering candidate information for profiles contacting candidates to complete profiles editing voter guide and working with director growth and engagement to launch guide according to the established timeline.
    • To ensure brand consistency graphic design correspondence and style edits reside within the communications department.
    • Voter Guide physical and digital distribution resides with the communications department.

Advocacy Campaign Management

  • Design execute and manage effective advocacy campaigns that advance The EquityAlliance and The Equity Alliance Funds policy objectives.
  • Develop campaign messaging materials and tactics to engage stakeholders andpromote awareness.

Rapid Response Organizing

The life cycle of rapid response advocacy usually looks like this: immediate alert to the community about it follow-up educational posts that help explain it deeper calls to action (contact rep tools petitions phone banks toolkits etc.) in-person calls to action (rallies committee hearings press conferences etc.) updates on progress and/or changes summary highlights of what happened and celebration or call-outs around the result to be used on TEA/TEAF social media in the TEA/TEAF newsletter and available on TEA/TEAF website for coalition partners consumption and use. Coordinate with the power building TEAm and communications to understand the advocacy organizing and communications components and ensure the needed support and assistance is provided in creating tools or events/activities that need to be uplifted.

  • Lead rapid response efforts to address urgent issues crises or emerging policy matters that impact marginalized communities. This includes creating social media copy newsletters and canvassing literature. While the Advocacy Manager guides content and communication strategy the Communications Coordinator is responsible for social media graphic creation designing canvassing literature creating rapid response toolkits and ordering canvassing literature.
  • Mobilize community members and coordinate timely actions to advocate for
    immediate change.

Government Accountability and Lobbying

  • Monitor government activities legislative developments and policy decisions at thelocal and state levels.
  • Engage in lobbying efforts to influence lawmakers and ensure the passage of
    policies that prioritize equity and justice.

Stakeholder Engagement and Coalition Building

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with partner organizations coalitions andcommunity leaders to strengthen advocacy efforts.
  • Collaborate with allies to amplify collective voices and build powerful coalitions forlasting impact.

Managing Candidate Recruitment Efforts

  • Oversee efforts to identify recruit and support candidates who align with TheEquity Alliance and The Equity Alliance Funds values and priorities.
  • Endorsement communications including building managing and executing the marketing timeline. Included responsibilities: creating and distributing the candidate endorsement questionnaire communicating with the leadership TEAm on current applicants and communicating with chosen endorsees about campaign initiatives and Election Day activities.
  • Twitter/X: keeping up with relevant conversations on the platform to be TEAs and TEAFs voice in advocacy and where political conversations are happening. The Communications Coordinator will assist with posts that need pre planned graphic designs and branded content specifically for events like National Voter Registration Day Voter Registration Deadline and any rapid response graphic communications.

Advocacy Training and Education

  • Develop and deliver training sessions to educate community members on effectiveadvocacy strategies and techniques.
  • Empower individuals to become informed advocates and participate actively in thedemocratic process.

Data Collection and Reporting:

  • Collect and analyze data related to advocacy outcomes community engagement andpolicy impact.
  • Prepare regular reports and updates to communicate progress and successes tointernal and external stakeholders.


Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Political Science Public Policy Social Work or a related field.
  • Proven experience in advocacy community organizing lobbying or public policypreferably in a nonprofit or social justice setting.
  • Strong understanding of local and state government structures legislative
    processes and policy advocacy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage andmobilize diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in campaign management event coordination
    stakeholder engagement and coalition building.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Commitment to equity justice and social change with a passion for empoweringmarginalized communities.
  • Proficiency in data collection analysis and reporting tools.
