About the Department: The Department of Public Safety Communications is the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for York County. As the PSAP we are staffed 24 hours a day to answer 9-1-1 emergency calls and dispatch police fire or medical services to those we serve. We are fortunate to have state-of-the art equipment to provide our responders and those needing emergency assistance. The four divisions of Public Safety Communications (Administration & Public Education Technical Services & Radio Communications Operations (Communications) and Professional Standards)work together to provide leadership emergency information and communication technology as well as extensive training to our staff and public safety partners.

About our opportunity

We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week) exempt Public Safety Communications Training Coordinator within the Public Safety Department. The purpose of this position is to develop implement and manage training programs for E-911 Telecommunication Specialists Public Safety Communications departmental staff and responding emergency personnel; to assist in developing and implementing a quality assurance program and to assist with the public education program.

You must be able to pass a background check and not convicted of a charge carrying one year or more and a drug screen. This position requires a polygraph and psychological during the interview process. Successful completion is mandatory.

Projected Hiring Range/Pay Grade 117:$56853.79 - $68224.55 per year. Salary is determined based on qualifications.

Work Schedule:Monday Friday 8:00 am -5:00 pm (40 hours per week); hours may vary based on operational needs. Must have ability to work 12-hour shifts which include days nights weekends and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises directs and evaluates assigned staff processing employee concerns and problems directing work counseling disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Instructs CPR courses National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Inquiry and Basic Certification courses Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certification courses APCO Fire Service Communications courses APCO Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification courses APCO Law Enforcement and APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO) courses.
  • Ensures all Public Safety Communications employees obtain and maintain adequate training and certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) CPR Fire Dispatch Public Safety Telecommunications Law Enforcement Communications SC Criminal Justice Academy Basic Telecommunications Operation Training and National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
  • Serves as ATAC - Assistant Terminal Agency coordinator ensuring compliance with all NCIC FBI and SLED mandates and regulation.
  • Serves as system administrator for training records management software and daily observation report software.
  • Serve as Shift Supervisor in the 911 center as required in their absence managing all aspects of the 911 center.
  • Performs duties of Telecommunication Specialist as required in emergencies or during staff shortages.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

About you

Experience and Education:

Certifications and Licenses: Must possess and maintain the following certifications:
  • Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecomunicator-1.
  • APCO Fire Communications APCO Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD).
  • APCO EMD Manager APCO Communications Center Supervisor.
  • APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO) CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Full Function.
  • NCIC Terminal Agency/Assistant Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC/ATAC).
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians EMT- Basic (minimum) and complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Basic Telecommunicator Operator Course.
  • Must possess and maintain instructor credentials for APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator-1: Fire Communications Emergency Medical Dispatch Law Enforcement Communications Training Officer etc.
  • CPR and First Aid
  • NCIC training.
