DescriptionAssist the Asia/Pacific Team in the Archives and Area Support Division of the Church History Department in collecting preserving and sharing Church history throughout our assigned areas. The emphasis for this internship will be on documenting the Church in the Pacific Asia and the Philippines. This is an exciting and unique opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in history or library/archival science. This paid internship is anticipated to last one year (12 months). This position is a part-time (28 hours per week) hourly nonexempt position.
Responsibilities- Record oral histories and gather records from mission leaders returned senior missionaries missionaries and Church members from Asia and the Pacific
- Support digitization projects and processing
- Process archival records in paper and/or electronic format acquired by the Church History Department
- Assist in workflow management of records from acquisitions through processing digitization and storage
Intern will learn and be exposed to:
- Archives research acquisition of records and processing records (workflow management) with heavy emphasis on records processing/cataloging techniques that align with Church History Department standards
- The Church History Departments worldwide documentation and digitization program
Intern will work under the direction of Church archivists and historians and will receive training and direction from them.
Qualifications- Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution and for one year following graduation. They must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.
- Experience with the Pacific southeast Asia or Asia.
- Bachelors degree (or senior looking to graduate within 6 months) in history library science international studies Asian studies Asian languages anthropology religious studies or a related field
- Basic understanding of archival research theory and practices
- Self-motivated and dependable
- Excellent English and editorial skills
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office tools particularly Word PowerPoint and Excel
- High degree of organizational skills including scheduling and managing multiple projects
- Respect for confidentiality
- Respect for diversity in the workplace
- Available to record video/audio interviews via a computer remotely with Church members in foreign countries
Available to work in the Church History Library (not remotely) 28 hours per week. There is flexibility in specific scheduling (especially if you are attending school) but work must be accomplished between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Preference will be given to candidates who also possess these additional qualities:
- Leadership and training experience
- Experience conducting research and/or working in an archive including arranging and describing archival collections or conducting oral histories
- Knowledge of the historiography and sources of Church history
- Understanding of Church history in a global context
- Asian language skills both written and verbal
- Familiarity with Asian and/or Pacific cultures
