Job Description

Overview

The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a Transportation Senior Operations Technician for a position with the Colchester team in District 5 of the District Maintenance and Fleet Division. This position is responsible for assisting the Supervisor in leading a team in providing the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. This position will be the Crew Leader for day-to-day work activities following the direction of the Supervisor and may act as a supervisor in their absence. The main duties of this position revolve around winter maintenance including plowing with specialized equipment and treating roads with winter materials. Secondary activities include maintenance and supervisory work on roads bridges culverts and related properties. The incumbent will enforce proper safety practices and will assist in train employees accordingly. Candidates should have strong leadership skills in addition to considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment used in transportation maintenance activities.

Duties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and work area and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools equipment and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment hazardous materials and debris from roadside litter are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required particularly during the winter months and is considered a condition of employment.
