If you are a dynamic thoughtful and compassionate educator who is inspired by the spark of gifted learners we encourage you to apply and bring your passion to our community.Acera: The Massachusetts School of Science Creativity and Leadership5 Lowell Avenue Winchester MA 01890 (8 miles north of Boston) Foundational Science-6th Grade Biology/ChemistryTuesdays and Thursdays9:00 AM - 10:45 AMJob Duties & Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & lead hands-on and applied science class and lab experiences for our 5th and 6th grade upper school students in ways which link learning to real-world innovations and scientific thought leaders. Facilitate and coach students leveraging a constructivist project-based learning approach as a part-time member of our teaching community. Concurrently develop creativity frustration tolerance emotional intelligence and collaborative skills; build classroom experiences and facilitate discussions which leverage hands-on labs experiences and simulations as the anchor of classroom experience enabling contextual understanding as well as adaptability and tolerance of ambiguity. Enable students to experience what it is like to operate and think like a scientist in ways that keep their engagement and curiosity alive including authentic (rather than grade-based) assessment; tap and keep alive intrinsic motivation. The expectations for this position include:
  • Teach a hands-on science class covering foundational scientific concepts and skills including Biology with options to add in Chemistry and/or Earth Science content
  • Design and/or refine existing novel curricula continuously upgrading and keeping learning relevant with an ever changing world.
  • Facilitate novel hands-on science lab experiences which link students learning to changes in science and biotech leveraging leading edge technology and concepts within science lab experiences.
  • Help to maintain an operating science lab at school following all appropriate safety laws protocol and regulatory requirements.
  • (OPTIONAL) Lead and/or co-lead small group math instruction grounded in constructivist inquiry based approaches for additional compensation.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years experience working with elementary and/or middle school children.
  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Graduate level degree in biology or another science field is desirable but not required.
  • Substantial life sciences coursework in college or substantial life sciences work experience.
  • Experience in scientific research in an academic or biotech setting is highly desirable though not required.
  • A growth mindset and enthusiasm for ongoing learning and professional growth.
Salary
  • Salary is competitive and will be determined based on experience.
