PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general supervision performs a variety of skilled mechanical repair work to automotive truck and power equipment; carries out a preventive maintenance program; involved in welding and fabrication.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
Essential Duties:
- Performs journeyman automotive truck and equipment repairs and troubleshooting:
- Performs a variety of skilled mechanical repairs to automotive and power equipment repairing electrical wiring repairs to hydraulics fuel and suspension systems OBD2 computer systems and other diagnostic software experience in heavy truck and equipment.
- Conducts tests troubleshoots hydraulic systems air brake systems and electrical systems
- Installs clutches in light/heavy duty truck
- Overhauls transmissions on light/heavy trucks and equipment
- Maintain all equipment in police vehicle including electronic components and other specialty lighting on other equipment
- Repairs and mounts tires on light duty vehicles
- Drivability diagnostics a plus
- Able to understand and use hydraulic and electrical schematics.
- Understanding of mobile refrigeration A/C certification a plus
- May order parts tools equipment apparatus and supplies used in the shop.
Non-essential Duties:
- Fabricates special equipment and attachments to equipment involving acetylene MIG TIG and plasma welding
- May provide windshield chip repair.
- Plans and carries out a preventive maintenance program on all equipment.
- Tests performance of equipment pumps and components.
- Performs maintenance work on shop building and grounds.
Other Duties: Performs related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to perform moderate/heavy physical work to lift 75 pounds and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and on occasion up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to stand walk sit ride climb bend kneel crawl twist reach grasp push pull pick pinch and perform similar body movements.
- Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to use hand and power tools operate a vehicle and other equipment.
- Ability to talk and hear in person by telephone and two-way radio and hear malfunctioning equipment.
- Ability to see and read instructions manuals meters and testing equipment.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of an approved apprenticeship and two-three years of journeyman experience or four-six years actual journeyman experience; possession of a valid Class A drivers license with a good driving record.
