The Career Development Graduate Assistant (CDGA) in the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement will work closely with Assistant Director to increase career services unique efforts (i.e. outreach programming events student engagement appointments etc.). The CDGA must be a studentfocused individual with exceptional advising skills. In addition CDGA must exemplify the Mays Centers mission vision and values by being professional courteous positive and ethical in every interaction and task.
Responsibilities:
Assist in providing excellent professional development services to students and alumni such as resume reviews job search skills interview preparation mock interviews networking and professional workplace behavior skills and career event preparation.
Aid in conducting professional development and careerrelated workshops and presentations for student groups to assist them in development of employability skills.
Support in providing current information about employment opportunities and labor market trends to students using local state and federal resources.
Maintain current knowledge of guidelines and competencies provided through governing organizations such as NACE and NCDA.
Participate in career workshops career fairs onsite employer visits and university events as appropriate.
Understand and apply career development and/or counseling techniques used in career planning and exploration.
Further develop knowledge and proficiency in the use of assessment tools to assist students and alumni with career planning and development.
Maintain knowledge and proficiency in the use of student databases used at the Mays Center/Career Services.
Develop knowledge of the themes and principles of Gallup StrengthsFinder and learn how to incorporate within various career centric student discussions (major exploration resume writing interview skills etc.)
Produce a specialized project/initiative surrounding an area of choice within career development to benefit our unique student population
Perform other duties as assigned.
If selected for the position at least two semester commitment is requested.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of their experience at Mays Center CDGAs will be able to:
Identify students/alumnis unique needs and develop a specific road map guiding them towards their career goals through inperson and virtual advising sessions.
Critically read and evaluate students application materials (Ex: resume cover letter etc.) for employment experiential learning and advanced education opportunities using appropriate assessment tools and resources.
Apply knowledge of career advising techniques (Ex: selfreflection narrative etc.) as effective intervention method in oneonone sessions with students.
Interpret assessment (Focus2 cardsorts etc.) results by identifying three reasons for their career and major choice.
Proficiently demonstrate networking (online and inperson) strategies to teach students how to use bestpractices when building their network.
Evaluate students interviewing skills by highlighting 3 areas for improvement to prepare them for their future job/graduate school interviews.
Create presentations effectively illuminating career development topics (Ex: resume/cover letter development networking interviewing skills etc.).
Required Education and Experience:
Student must be enrolled in amasters program as a fulltime studentat Texas A&M UniversitySan Antonio taking at least 6 credit hours.
Student must be at least familiar with A&MSAs Career Advising and its services.
Must be in good academic standing with the university according to Graduate Student Academic Standing Standards and have a minimum GPA of 3.00.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Enrolled in the Master of Counseling program.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Strong interest with generating innovative ideas and initiate new programs.
Knowledge of computers and software related to employment services for students in a university setting including Microsoft Office.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills for working with students alumni faculty and staff.
Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to work independently.
Exceptional Adaptability and Flexibility skills.
Strong selfinitiative skills.
Working under minimal supervision
