Lead Powerline Technician
Reporting to the Line Supervisor the Lead Powerline Technician is responsible for planning and overseeing the activities of the Line staff to ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures during the construction maintenance and troubleshooting of energized electric distribution systems up to 27.6kV. This role involves leading and organizing work crews ensuring both the quality and efficiency of completed tasks preparing material requisitions for projects and maintaining required support documentation. This role includes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Section 271 and 2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide onsite leadership and organization for assigned projects and tasks.
- Plan and direct the work of Line staff to ensure safe practices during the construction maintenance and troubleshooting of energized electric distribution systems up to 27.6kV.
- Identify Eliminate and Control Hazards before the completion of tasks and as conditions change.
- Lead and coordinate crews ensuring productivity effectiveness and adherence to work quality standards.
- Conduct daily tailboard conferences to ensure crews understand the project scope work methods hazards and control measures.
- Provide specific and constructive feedback to management on safety issues identifying potential risks and solutions and encouraging open communication and collaboration
- Make decisions based on company polies current legislation and best practices.
- Read and interpret project drawings and work instructions; document all field changes accurately on asconstructed drawings.
- Determine job procedures allocate appropriate resources and coordinate necessary equipment for timely project completion.
- Assist with construction and maintenance planning; assess job sites for risks and implement safety precautions.
- Organize pick up and deliver materials tools and equipment required for assigned work.
- Provide daily instruction coaching and mentoring to apprentices journeypersons and other team members.
- Interface and coordinate with external stakeholders such as customers subcontractors and municipal inspectors.
- Communicate with System Control to report defective equipment or unsafe conditions.
- Ensure proper Safe Conditions for Work are established under the Utility Work Protection Code.
- Apply for and manage Utility Work Protection permits as required.
- Prepare written work and traffic plans; assign tasks based on resources procedures and worker experience.
- Ensure compliance with safe work practices including proper use of PPE tools and vehicles.
- Conduct inspections of newly installed or modified distribution infrastructure in accordance with Regulation 22/04.
- Complete all required documentation and material requisitions in support of project .
- Perform duties as outlined in the Powerline Technician job description.
- Fulfill supervisory responsibilities in alignment with Section 271 and 2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Valid Journeyperson Powerline Technician certification (EDA/MEA or equivalent).
- Minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent.
- Valid Ontario Drivers License (A or D) with Z endorsement in good standing.
- Valid CPR First Aid and AED certification.
- Must be able to fulfill oncall duties and participate in regular standby rotations.
- Must reside within 35 minutes of the Welland HydroElectric System Corp. office.
- Proven ability to analyze situations solve problems and recommend operational improvements.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and support team members.
- Demonstrated knowledge of line work supervision and coordination.
- Extensive knowledge of overhead and underground construction and maintenance practices up to 27.6kV.
- Skilled and competent in operating all standard line equipment.
- Proficient in interpreting and working with engineering drawings.
- Competent in the use of Windowsbased computer systems.
- Strong knowledge of applicable health safety and regulatory requirements including:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
- IHSA Electrical and Utility Safety Rules and Safe Practice Guides
- WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act
- Environmental regulations
- ESA CSA and USF standards
- Clean workrelated safety record and a demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
