The Vision Center of Excellence (VCE) is a specialized organization within the Department of Defense (DoD) that focuses on improving vision care for military personnel. The VCE provides leadership research and support for the management and treatment of eye injuries particularly those sustained in combat and other visionrelated conditions. It coordinates vision care services across the Military Health System (MHS) and collaborates with other agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to ensure comprehensive care and rehabilitation for service members and veterans with visual impairments.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is the flagship medical center for the U.S. military located in Bethesda Maryland. It was formed in 2011 by merging the National Naval Medical Center and the original Walter Reed Army Medical Center. WRNMMC serves activeduty service members veterans military families and highranking officials offering a wide range of medical services including trauma care rehabilitation vision services and specialized care for conditions like traumatic brain injuries. It also houses the Vision Center of Excellence (VCE) which coordinates vision care across the military health system.
Position Summary
The National Vision Care Coordinator will lead a nationwide vision care coordination program within the Military Health System (MHS) supporting the Department of Defense (DoD) Vision Center of Excellence (VCE). This position serves as the central hub for integrating and aligning the activities of four regional vision care coordinators located at Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) ensuring continuity of care and facilitating communication across the DoD and Veterans Affairs (VA) systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee the DoD vision care coordination program across all regions
- Serve as the lead point of contact between VCE regional coordinators and DoD/VA stakeholders
- Provide programmatic oversight reporting and performance monitoring
- Standardize best practices for vision care referral followup and rehabilitation processes
- Coordinate data sharing outcome metrics and quality improvement strategies
- Support the transitionin and transitionout planning and documentation for contract lifecycle continuity
- Represent the VCE in national meetings and crossagency collaboration efforts
Education Requirements
- Bachelors degree required in Healthcare Administration Public Health Vision Science or a related field
- Masters degree preferred in Health Administration Clinical Leadership or related discipline
Experience Requirements
- 5 years of clinical experience as a health care coordinator social worker case manager or registered nurse. Also serves as the contract manager
- Demonstrated success managing nationwide or multisite healthcare programs
- Experience working with DoD VA or interagency health coordination
- Understanding of vision care systems (optometry ophthalmology or rehabilitation services) preferred
- Strong leadership communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Travel & Emergency Services
- Some travel may be required to attend meetings training or conferences within the Continental United States (CONUS) and within the National Capitol Region (NCR)
- Occasional support may be needed outside of standard working hours for emergency services or contingency plan activations
