This includes juveniles committed to the Department of Corrections and placed in residential outofhome placement as well as youth that have completed their correctional placement and are on supervised release known as aftercare. Job Summary
We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as an Administrative Captain. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated leader to make a meaningful impact in the field of corrections. As an Administrative Captain at the South Dakota Department of Corrections you will be responsible for a range of critical tasks that ensure the smooth operation of our facility. This is a fulltime Monday through Friday position working to be determined with a rotating on call duty officer schedule. Your role will encompass the following duties:
  • Staff Schedule Management: Develop maintain and coordinate staff schedules ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and departments. Manage vacation requests training schedules mentorship programs and onthejob training (OJT) for staff;
  • Backup to Disciplinary Hearing Officer (DHO): Provide essential support and backup to the Disciplinary Hearing Officer assisting with disciplinary hearings investigations and ensuring due process is followed;
  • FTO Program Development/Management: Design implement and oversee a Field Training Officer (FTO) program for new staff members. Ensure comprehensive training assessment and mentorship to facilitate their successful integration into the facility;
  • Bid Posting: Manage the bid posting process for staff rotations promotions and reassignments adhering to facility policies and union agreements;
  • Direct Supervision: Supervise and lead various staff members across different departments ensuring their adherence to facility policies safety protocols and effective performance;
  • Timekeeping System (TKS) Management: Oversee the accurate and efficient use of the Timekeeping System for staff under your direct supervision ensuring timely and accurate submission of attendance records;
  • Discipline and Mentorship: Provide guidance mentorship and disciplinary action as needed for staff under your direct supervision promoting a positive and productive work environment;
  • Duty Officer Rotation: Participate in duty officer rotations ensuring that facility operations are maintained at all times and responding to emergencies and incidents as required;
  • Weekly Reports: Prepare and present weekly operational reports to the Associate Warden of Operations highlighting key achievements challenges and areas of improvement;
  • other duties as assigned

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • bachelors degree in criminal justice Corrections or a related field;
  • minimum of 5 years of experience in corrections with 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role;
  • knowledge of human resources principles procedures and systems sufficient to manage and maintain a harmonious labor relations environment in accordance with state policy/procedure and affirmative action/equal opportunity policies;
  • excellent written and oral communication skills to relay sensitive information to staff the public law enforcement agencies attorneys offenders and other state agencies and to elicit cooperation from staff and offenders to resolve difficult and potentially dangerous situations affecting the safety and security of offenders staff and the public;
  • human relations and conflict resolution skills sufficient to effectively solve problems in a manner that is sensitive to organizational structures cultures as well as the needs of groups and individuals; and to elicit cooperation from staff and offenders to resolve difficult and potentially dangerous situations affecting the safety and security of offenders staff and the public;
  • strong understanding of correctional facility operations and regulations;
  • proficiency in MS Office Suite and timekeeping systems;
  • demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure and in emergency situations.
