Under the direction of the Director of Neurogenetics the Department of Neurology is accepting applications for a genetic counselor who will support neurogenetics program research and clinical activities. Clinically the counselor will educate and counsel patients and families on various genetic conditions based on their family history and diagnosis of pediatric onset neurogenetic disorders especially pediatric neuromuscular and movement disorders. He/she will prepare for clinics in advance by reviewing records documenting relevant pedigree information screening patients and preparing the necessary educational materials for the visit.
Clinical Activities include:
- Draft and document notes on the counseling visits and phone calls into the electronic medical record system.
- Billing accordingly for all visits in the Electronic billing system.
- Supervise genetic counseling students as they are assigned to the outpatient practice.
- Screening patient records in advance and assessing patient and family needs prior to the clinical or research visit.
- Performs patient/family genetic risk assessment: collects and evaluates medical and family histories; obtains and reviews medical records to confirm reported diagnosis; analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient medical records and resource materials; evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporates into clinical practice.
- Educates patients and their families on the benefits and limitations of various genetic testing options.
- Recommend and order appropriate genetic testing
- Followup with test results and conveying the findings to families as necessary
- Act asa liaison for medical student visitors residents and fellows
- Act as a Phone resource for patients and providers seeking genetic counseling
- Attend and present as appropriate at academic conferences as they relate to genetic counseling.
- Attend and actively participate in all department meetings and seminars
- Outreach support and education of other colleagues in neurology and genetics
Research Activities Include:
- Assists with preparation submission and maintenance of IRB FDA NIH and other regulatory and research documents and in managing and entering appropriate data in registries or genetic databases in close collaboration with other neurogenetics program team members.
- Oversees compliance to research protocols; manages quality control completion and submission of study related documentation; prepares reports for organizations and agencies.
- Collaborate with team members on preparing grants and publications
- Assists the director in the development of educational materials for use in prenatal and postnatal genetics counseling setting and for pilot newborn screening studies.
- Helps educate the community and other research professionals regarding studies and program activities.
- Coordinates and performs responsibilities related to ongoing sponsored research studies including determining subject population availability developing informed consents and screening materials screening and recruiting subjects scheduling visits obtaining informed consent answering subject inquiries and acting as a liaison between participants and studyrelated parties.
- May help supervise and mentor rotating genetic counseling students fellows or other junior team members as appropriate
- Develops and maintains patient databases investigational logs and records of administered medical devices monitored and/or procedures followed.
- Coordinates with referring physicians to provide information regarding available research projects and to maintain a strong referral basis.
- Exceptional organizational skills attention to detail and demonstrated human relations and effective written and oral communication skills also required.
- Ability to work as part of a team. Familiarity working with pediatric patients and their families.
- Comfortable using computer databases. Familiarity with genomic databases and variant classification.
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices FDA HIPAA and IRB regulations; an understanding of research procedures; and the ability to function independently following an initial training period.
- Departments may require IRB CITI Course or IATA DGR training within a specified timeframe.
Fluency in spoken Spanish highly desirable
Current licensure or eligibility to become licensed by the Mass Board of Registration of Genetic Counselors required
The genetic counselor must have a Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling or related field and be Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American College of Genetic Counseling.
Genetic counselor must have prior experience in counseling individuals regarding DNAbased diagnostic testing.. Pediatric experience preferred.
