READING SPECIALIST SECONDARY

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: READING SPECIALIST SECONDARY

CONTRACT YEAR: 10MONTH

SALARY: TEACHER SALARY SCALE COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE (Based on thesalary scale)

DEPARTMENT: DIVISION

START DATE: AUGUST 1

Job Description: The Reading Specialist is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school through coaching supporting and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction; including the integration of literacy and best practices throughout the day and across all content. The Reading Specialist coaches teachers supports lesson development and implementation collaboratively plans and conducts professional development. The Reading Specialist is responsible for analyzing school literacy data and collaborating with administrators in planning for future literacy needs. The Reading Specialist may also be responsible for instructing students individually or in groups to enable students to develop literacy skills.


Direct Accountability and Report: Works under the supervision of the buildinglevel principal who is responsible for carrying out the guidance and direction of programs at the school level. An annual evaluation will be based upon the job description district and personal goals and objectives specific to the school or the position student achievement data and the performance of the Reading Specialist.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Must possess a Bachelors degree
  • Holds a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist
  • A valid reading specialist certificate is preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three 3 years of successful fulltime teaching experience preferred.
  • Effective instructional delivery techniques and communication skills
  • Knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial reading instruction
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school colleagues administrators parents and students

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES


Duties of the Reading Specialist include but are not limited to the following:


  • Assists administrators and teachers at the assigned school in the implementation of a comprehensive literacy program including its impact across content.
  • Assists administrators in conducting learning walkthroughs to provide feedback to teachers to improve literacy instruction at the school and use data to plan for ongoing monitoring and support.
  • Assists with screening evaluating and recommending interventions for students reading in the lower quartile.
  • Attends staff development programs curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  • Collects and facilitates the review and use of school literacy data to guide instruction and plan for student needs.
  • Completes reports collects data and provides information for program monitoring as requested.
  • Coordinates the literacy work of other reading staff in the building as applicable.
  • Coordinates the schools reading program across all content.
  • Facilitates the schools literacy team to implement a support framework for student achievement in literacy and to review the reading progress of students.
  • Implements coaching cycles to develop teachers capacity in best practices for literacy instruction.
  • Keeps abreast of developments research and new technology in the field.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Participates in developing revising and monitoring the implementation of the curriculum.
  • Participates in the construction and selection of literacy assessments.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal or other appropriate administrators
  • Provides individual and/or small group instruction to meet the needs of students as applicable.
  • Selects requisitions and maintains books instructional materials and instructional aids.
  • Supports teachers in planning delivering and assessing quality literacy instruction throughout the day and in all content.
