JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for a Battery Technology Department Head to join our Systems and Emerging Capabilities Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARLs purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific engineering and technology problems in support of the Navy the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Intel Community (IC). This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a nontenure Research Faculty.
You will:
Lead a group of engineers scientists and support staff that are engaged in the development of high performance and innovative battery technologies for a variety of undersea vehicle and nonvehicle applications
Lead the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge of batterybased electrical energy storage
Provide project updates to sponsors present research findings at conferences and publish in peerreviewed journals
Collaborate with engineers in other technical areas across ARL
Plan staff and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times
Recruit retain and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty
Identify professional development and training opportunities
Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research
Evaluate professional growth through performance reviews
Lead the team maintaining and improving ARLs battery testing facilities
This position can be filled at multiple levels depending upon successful candidates education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years of related experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.
Additional responsibilities for higher level positions include:
Contribute to the design development implementation and analysis of technical engineering products systems and subsystems
Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs
Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations correlate data recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes
Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test prove or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include taking measurements and recording observations collecting compiling and processing data; may include planning/designing experiments or tests and supervising the thereof
Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports documents proposals papers or oral/written presentations
Manage projects of varying size and scope including technical elements budget/schedule implications and communication with sponsor(s)
Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members engineers and scientists to accomplish organizational goals; provide innovative problemsolving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities
Initiate or contribute to business development activities (i.e. white papers proposals etc.
May supervise the work of lowerlevel staff and undergraduate students
Required skills/experience areas include:
Knowledge skills and experience
Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists
Previous success with collaborations in a multidisciplinary teamoriented culture
Proposal and technical writing skills
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Active government security clearance
Demonstrating experience managing large multiyear research efforts in a relevant area
Successful technical publications in peerreviewed journals or conference proceedings.
