Job Description

Pediatrics/Obstetrics Pool

The School of Nursing at California State University San Marcos accepts applications on an ongoing basis for our Pediatrics/OB pool of parttime lecturers. Clinical days hours and clinical sites vary within San Diego County and Riverside County.

This is a Pediatrics/OB Pool Ad for the following courses:

  • NURS 233: Nursing Care of Children Laboratory
  • NURS 333: Nursing Care of Children for ABSN Students Laboratory
  • NURS 231: Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family Laboratory
  • NURS 331: Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family Laboratory for ABSN Students

Applicants will use effective facetoface instruction and assessment techniques to promote students successful achievement of course learning competencies

The clinical course instructor is responsible to prepare for and teach the clinical course with the general supervision of the course coordinator. Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Teaching/Role Model
    1. Provide instruction as directed by the course coordinator and consistent with the syllabus in a clear and engaging manner that is appropriate to the student experience and expertise to assist them in meeting course learning outcomes and completing required clinical hours.
    2. Provide handson demonstration of nursing care as needed and ensure care is consistent with the clinical agency accreditation standards and regulatory guidelines (California BRN CCNE TJC).
    3. Create topics of discussion and education information for postconferences in coordination with the Course Coordinator syllabus and corresponding didactic course.
    4. Model professional nursing behavior and communication at all times.
    5. Complete weekly evaluation of students clinical practice and document both positive progression and areas for improvement. Utilize SoN resources to ensure student success.
    6. Notify the Course Coordinator if a student is not progressing as needed.
    7. Assist students to master course material by being available through office hours and by helping them to access other School of Nursing resources including but not limited to webbased technology and open/practice laboratory sessions.
    8. Utilize computer and applicationbased technologies as required to complete instructional and assessment duties. Includes using the assigned Cougar Course.
    9. Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with the university and school requirements and deadlines.
    10. Communicate effectively with the course coordinator colleagues laboratory staff and/or clinical agency personnel to resolve issues or concerns; work effectively as part of the overall faculty team demonstrating positive and collaborative interpersonal relations to meet student needs.
    11. Attend faculty meetings.
    12. Complete all SoN orientation requirements and respond to administrative requests and inservice requirements in a timely manner.
  2. Clinical &/or Simulation Supervision
    1. Collaborate with clinical agency personnel to arrange site orientations and clinical experiences to ensure compliance with all agency and other regulatory requirements.
    2. Prepare clinical experiences at the assigned clinical site prior to student arrival to facilitate student learning and respect clinical facility norms and operations.
    3. Provide students with appropriate learning experiences whenever possible; revise clinical assignments as needed based on student progression.
    4. Supervise students in successfully completing course requirements including demonstrating modeling and assisting with the full range of patient care situations.
    5. Collaborate with Simulation team as directed during students simulation experience.
    6. Maintain professional practice knowledge base and skills needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice for the assigned course.
  3. Other duties
    1. Complete annual performance evaluation per university requirements.
    2. Other duties may include assisting the SoN with the course and/or program revision/development assisting with research and participating in committees as an active member of the faculty.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • BRN Faculty requirement: Pediatric (Acute Care Peds) or OB (L&D & PostPartum) nursing work experience within the previous 5 years (NICU only experience not accepted).Direct patient care experience which can be met by: (A) One 1 years continuous fulltime or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or (B) One 1 academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency.
  • State licensure by the California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Meet the School of Nursings requirements regarding current immunizations and CPR licensure
  • Per California State Universitys OutofState Employment Policy the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSUrelated work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment

Preferred qualifications:

  • A doctorate in Nursing (DNP PhD or EdD with emphasis on Nursing Education)
  • Experience teaching a pediatric or OB clinical course
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • AnticipatedHiring Salary Range: $5836 $6240 per fulltime month

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

  • CSU Classification Salary RangeLecturer A AY: $5007 $6359 per fulltime month
  • CSU Classification Salary RangeLecturer B AY: $5925 $12594 per fulltime month

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range commensurate with education and experience.

Appointments may last from one day to a whole applicant pool may be used to fill vacant positions on an asneeded basis throughout the academic year.
