Job Description

As our Specialist Data Engineering some of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety Health and Environment
    • Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
    • Support good housekeeping in the broader department and onsite.
    • Participate in safety initiatives (e.g. VFLs) as required.
    • Active participation in SLAMs HPHs relevant Risk Assessments and closeout of Safety Actions.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Data Architecture Design:
    • Design and implement robust data architectures that support the storage processing and retrieval of engineering reliability data.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data requirements and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Data Modelling:
    • Develop and implement data models that represent the structure and relationships of engineering data.
    • Optimize data models for performance scalability and ease of use.
  • Data Integration:
    • Integrate data from various sources including sensors equipment and other systems to create a unified and comprehensive view of engineering reliability data.
    • Implement Extract Transform Load (ETL) processes to ensure data consistency and accuracy.
  • The Work: Key Outputs and Accountabilities
  • Database Management:
    • Manage databases used for storing engineering reliability data.
    • Implement and optimise database structures indexes and queries for efficient data retrieval.
  • Data Quality Assurance:
    • Implement and enforce data quality standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of engineering data.
    • Develop and execute data validation processes to identify and address inconsistencies or errors.
  • Realtime Data Processing:
    • Implement solutions for realtime data processing especially for monitoring and analysing realtime data from sensors and equipment.
    • Ensure timely and accurate data updates to support engineering reliability monitoring and decisionmaking.
  • Data Security and Compliance:
    • Implement security measures to safeguard engineering reliability data.
    • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry standards.
  • Collaboration with Data Scientists and Analysts:
    • Work closely with data scientists and analysts to understand their data requirements and provide the necessary infrastructure for advanced analytics and modelling.
  • Scalability and Performance Optimization:
    • Optimize data infrastructure for scalability to handle growing volumes of engineering data.
    • Continuously monitor and improve the performance of data processing and retrieval.
  • Documentation:
    • Create and maintain documentation for data architecture processes and models.
    • Provide documentation that facilitates other team members understanding and use of engineering reliability data.
  • Continuous Learning:
    • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering.
    • Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance the data engineering capabilities within the Engineering Reliability function.

This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance HME/Plant (ENG) department on a band 6.12 level reporting to the Section Manager Reliability


Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree/Bachelor of Technology in a relevant field such as Information Technology Computer Science Engineering or Business Information/ Systems Engineering 
  • SAP Certified Application Associate) Oracle (Oracle Certified Associate) Microsoft Dynamics or other relevant ERP platforms
  • SA Drivers License

Technical Knowledge

  • Indepth knowledge of Database Management Systems (DBMS) and their management with 68 years of relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of principles behind Data Modeling and Architecture.
  • Profound knowledge of ETL (Extract Transform Load) Processes.
  • Familiarity with Programming and Scripting Languages in the context of database management.
  • Thorough understanding of Big Data Technologies.
  • Extensive experience in Realtime Data Processing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Data Quality and Governance.
  • Indepth understanding of Security and Compliance measures in the context of database management.
  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing as it pertains to database management.
  • Advanced understanding and application of Computer Literacy including MS Office Projects Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven experience in identifying and implementing business and strategic improvement opportunities and projects related to database management in mining operations.
  • Application of Project management fundamentals in the context of database management.
  • Thorough understanding of change management methodologies.
