Job Description

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for a Circulation and Branch Services Director to join our team. This opportunity offers excellent benefits working 37.5 hours a week with days nights and weekends as needed.

The annual salary range for this position is $based on skills and qualifications. Our schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed.

Position Summary:

The Circulation and Branch Services Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing circulation services and the effective operation of branch locations within Schaumburg Township District Library. This position ensures exceptional customer service efficient circulation processes and the smooth daily operations of branch locations. The Department Director collaborates with Library staff administration and community stakeholders to support the Library’s mission of providing accessible and equitable library services to all patrons.

In addition the Director serves as a Librarian responsible for assessing and fulfilling patrons’ information or material needs. This is achieved by 1 utilizing library resources or 2 referring patrons to the appropriate department service or outside agency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Management

  • Serve as a member of the Library’s Leadership Team
  • Oversee operations of Circulation Department and the Branches
  • Serve as “Person in Charge” of Library as needed
  • Implement administrative and Board policies
  • Develop implement and evaluate Circulation policies in alignment with best practices and ease of service while staying compliant with many laws and policies
  • Analyze circulation trends data and workflows to improve efficiency and resource allocation
  • Lead train and mentor staff to ensure the ability to resolve patron concerns encouraging a patronfirst mindset across all levels of the team
  • Approve and process weekly timecards
  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for Circulation Branch Managers and staff
  • Develop and implement service models that enhance accessibility efficiency and community engagement
  • Conduct regular Branch visits to assess operations address concerns and support staff development
  • Develop short and longrange goals for the Circulation and Branch areas based on needs and plans.
  • Work with all age groups effectively
  • Participate in longterm planning to enhance Circulation and Branch services and align with the Library’s mission and goals with a strong vision to the future needs of services
  • Work with Library administration to recommend and identify funding opportunities including grants and partnerships to support Library initiatives
  • Maintain reports on all relevant statistics generated from the department
  • Collect and interpret statistics; document and evaluate services; and analyze the costs of Library services in order to develop and justify appropriate levels of service and to determine trends and develop strategies to improve the library experience
  • Recommend new services routinely to increase operational effectiveness
  • Analyze and manage workflows and processes to improve delivery speed effectiveness and accuracy
  • Submits monthly report of activities for inclusion in monthly Board report
  • Prepare annual departmental budget which includes staffing needs to the Executive Director and the Director of Finance
  • Monitor budgets throughout the year
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of staff
  • Motivate staff; encourage growth recognize skills and foster improvement when needed; provide and accept regular feedback
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Provide quality management through assessment improvement and follow through; apply technologies as needed to streamline processes and operational efficiencies
  • Maintain patron and employee confidentiality
  • Manage and complete special projects as requested
  • Collaborate on best practices with other members of the Library on programming and services

    Public Service

  • Provide service at both Branches and Circulation at the Public Service Desk
  • Develop and implement new services or restructure existing services
  • Advocate for Circulation and Branch Services within the Library and the broader community
  • Stay informed about the names of officials organizations clubs businesses schools social agencies etc. in the greater Schaumburg area
  • Instruct patrons in the use of the Library’s materials the online catalog and the Internet
  • Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s circulating collections and recommend effective and consistent practices
  • Maintain working knowledge of the services and practices of the greater Library organization

    Professional Development

  • Conduct staff evaluations and address personnel matters
  • Promote professional and developmental growth by providing evaluations training seminars and classes
  • Develop strong Library and leadership skills and techniques to help patrons to the fullest degree possible
  • Refine or enhance service skills by reading professional literature and attending seminars workshops and professional meetings
  • Attend meetings and training as required or requested
  • Communicate clearly through all platforms internally and externally
  • Cope with the stress of the job and get along with coworkers

    Community

  • Represent the Library in an official capacity to outside groups involved with Circulation and Branch Services that benefit the Library
  • Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboring public and special libraries
  • Maintain professional involvement in the library science industry
  • Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind
  • Maintain the ability and patience to understand and make yourself understood by all patrons

    Other Duties

  • Complete projects for the Executive Director and Deputy Director as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALAaccredited school or university
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional Library experience and 3 years supervisory. Experience in a Public Library preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both a written and oral format with MS Office products and proficient in the use of Excel and other revaluation and analytical tools
  • Ability to work independently and work various hours
  • Must be able to assist in developing a team and be a team member with strong collaboration skills
