Townsville Hospital and Health Service is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Advanced (Identified) to join the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team within the Child and Youth Mental Health Service.

This is an important opportunity for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who is passionate about supporting children young people and families through culturally safe respectful and community informed care.

In this role your cultural knowledge lived experience community connection and professional capability will help young people feel understood supported safe and connected throughout their mental health care journey.

About the role

As a key member of the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team you will work alongside clinicians Elders families carers and community organisations to support better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people accessing mental health services.

You will help strengthen cultural safety across the service by supporting culturally appropriate assessments contributing to care planning and providing cultural guidance to the broader Child and Youth Mental Health Service team.

This role is about more than service delivery. It is about bringing culture care advocacy and connection into mental health support for young people and families who need it most.

Key responsibilities

In this role you will:

• Support cultural assessments and contribute to culturally appropriate care planning
  
• Provide cultural support guidance and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children young people and families
  
• Work closely with clinicians Elders families carers and community organisations
  
• Build strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families communities and service partners
  
• Provide cultural advice and guidance to the broader Child and Youth Mental Health Service team
  
• Help young people feel safe heard respected and supported throughout their care journey
  
• Strengthen cultural safety and support better engagement with mental health services

You will bring cultural knowledge strong communication skills respect for community and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team.

You will understand the importance of cultural safety social and emotional wellbeing family connection community connection and culturally informed care when supporting young people through mental health challenges.

Essential requirements

Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

You will hold one of the following qualifications:

For appointment between HWF3.1 to HWF3.5:

• Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  
• Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
  
• Certificate IV in Mental Health
  
• Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs
  

For appointment between HWF3.2 to HWF3.7 or HWF3.8 limited to employees who meet the requirements of HED 04/23:

• Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  
• Diploma of Mental Health
  
• Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs
  

Suitable applicants who do not currently hold the Certificate IV qualification may be appointed temporarily at the HWF3 no qualification level with support to complete the required qualification under HR Policy G10 Study and Research Assistance Scheme (SARAS). Once the qualification is completed the appointee will progress to a permanent HWF3.1 position.
